Very interesting museum about torture
Aug 2019 • Family
Museo Storico della Tortura is the typical museum located in an old medieval town, where you can see a lot of medieval torture objects and the description of them. Also, here you can see a exposition about death penalty (in fact, they are two museums, one about torture and other one about death penalty). The museum is located in the medieval town called San Gimignano, in the Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. Really the explanations are very interesting (generally these museums only explain morbid things, but this is very correct and you can learn a lot of mad things, but historical ones in Europe). So, I recommend a visit of these museums, better without children.

Disturbing but Very Interesting

This museum will not be for everyone. We had one child who really wanted to visit this museum and another who was quite upset about the whole thing. You certainly do see the variety of torture devices used during the centuries and overall, it was quite informative. It is a small museum, but I think it was the right size - you would not want to spend a lot of time in a bigger torture museum.

The torture museum serves as a gruesome reminder of how sadistic humans have been, and in some places continue to be.

This small museum cost us €8 each. It's a small museum but with a lot of things to see. Despite that I still think the price is a little high.

The museum has a vast collection of implements and artifacts from all over the globe and from different times. All displays had English translations so we were able to read them too.

When we went there was also a small exhibition on Leonardo DaVinci and his military machines. Unfortunately I found this part of the museum severely lacking and more an after thought.

worth a visit

I was not sure about going to the museum as some people on trip adviser stated that it was not worth it. Glad I did not bother about their reviews. I found it very interesting and unfortunately highlights man's inhumanity to fellow man. Yes its gruesome but that was how the world was in those days ( not much better now ). When you buy a ticket for this museum you also get entry to another one. The lady at the counter will tell you how to get there. They are quite close together.

More Brutality if the Current News is Not Enough"
Jan 2018
This is a medieval torture room reconstructed in San Gmignano in Tuscany.in museum form. We found it not necessary unless you are focused on the brutalities of the Middle Ages and beyond. There are wonderful restaurants, stores offering interesting things to buy, fabulous vistas down on the plains of Tuscany and two of the best homemade gelaterias in Italy. Who needs The Rack, and other ugly forms of torture? Skip it for more interesting living businesses to explore.

Interesting

The articles in this museum had more of a story behind them than the sister museum opposite. The translations were in English although not available for every display which was disappointing. With a bit more narrative it could have been more thought provoking rather than a gimmick.

Not Bad

We bought tickets with the intent of seeing both this museum and the death museum. We toured this one and it was very nice to be able to read everything in English and they also had explanations.

There were so very sad and graphic things in there so do not go if you are squeamish. You can do this museum and read all the descriptions in about 30 minutes.

Now onto the death museum. With a map and being pointed in the direction of the museum we never found it. We searched for a couple of hours, climbed hundreds of steps and hills, and asked a handful of people for help but nope it was MIA. We finally gave up and went and climbed the tower.

Loved every horrifying moment. A fascinating display of actual instruments and how they were used. Humans are just awful.

We were driving from Florence to Siena and I saw signs for the museum and made us stop. It was great! The little town is super cute too!

Why not do something different
Jul 2015 • Family
We saw this place just off the main square and instantly our 10 year old wanted to view this display. Entry cost was approx 13 euro for t1 adult and one child. Very informative and a great display of all kinds of weird items some more brutal than others.

A great way to see history in another aspect. And reality of how life was. would say you need about an hour in here.
