a Jewel
Aug 2020
After the magnificence of the Camposanto, this lovely church looks incredibly small. It is located along the river, and used to be right by it before they decided to elevate it in order to preserve it from floods. The detailed decoration of the building is quite remarkable
Unfortunately we could not go inside as the visiting times are quite limited.

Underrated gem of Pisa.

Santa Maria della Spina church. Gothic architectural exemplar from XIV century, situated at the banks of Arno river. The name of the church allegedly derives from a relict that is kept within – a spike from the Jesus Christ crown-of-thorns. Unfortunately we were not able to get inside as due to Covid-19 church is currently closed.

Maybe the best Pisa has to offer
Aug 2020
The Holy Mary of the spine offers a great inside to mediaeval mankind. The building itself is devoted to one thorn..
Allegedly this was a thorn of the crown of Christ himself. But we will never know. The place has an exhibition on display demonstrating that the chips of wood allegedly belonging to the cross are enough to lay a railway track. Interesting to visit. And not hard to find.

Mini church
Aug 2020
Beautiful little mini church on the banks of the river. The church was closed when we walked past but was wonderfully ornate and picturesque with amazing details on the carvings.

TIP: inside not generally accessible, but pretty on the outside.

Both or the times I passed by the inside of this small church was closed. However, the exterior is definitely worth looking at. The stonework is ornate. Now that the city of Pisa has grown up around this church, it appears in a somewhat incongruous position.

Worth stopping by to look at.

A gem
Nov 2019
We hit upon this gem of a church, sited at the riverside. It has free access and is definitely worth a visit, inside and outside due to the magnificent sculptures adorning the walls.

A little jewel that most tourists miss.

This beautiful Pisan gothic church, which reportedly had one of the thorns of Jesus crown, was moved from a lower level by the river to its current location, just overlooking the river. At sunset, the sunlight enters through the coloured glass windows for a truly magnificent effect.

Sidewalk Church
Feb 2020 • Solo
Lovely small church sitting at the edge of the Arno on the sidewalk. It’s my guess that the road that bisects the river and the church was shifted slightly so as to not have to move/damage this church - it is sort of out there on its own ‘island.’ It wasn’t open when I visited, but the heavily detailed stonework on the outside was very impressive.

Beautiful little church, shame it wasn't open
Oct 2019
We visited Pisa on a Thursday and discovered this charming little church right on the banks for the Arno. It is an incredibly beautiful church from the outside so I was really hoping that we could see inside - alas it was closed both when we walked past on the way to the Duomo/Learning Tower about 10am and still closed when we came back past a 1pm in the afternoon.
