Fantastic wineyard with authentic owners and even more fantastic wine
Sep 2020
If you are bored about the Chianti Region, just have a look at the most beautiful vineyard in Toscany.

The owner Moreno is an unique person who is not focused on selling, he is really helpful, explaining everything and makes a superb wine tasting.

Don't miss also his fantastic olive oil, this one is by far the best one we tried in the whole region.

We came individually and spontaneous there after we tried his wine in a restaurant in Lucca. Even if we came there in the high season of harvesting he took the time.

The chardonnay is unique and perfect not just for a nice fish dish, also for just having an Apero as we Swiss guys say, this one is perfect.

If you would like to have a deep red, than go for the Merlot.

He is winning yearly fantastic prices for his wine. It is a shame that you can not buy them here in Switzerland but he is willing to send also the wines on an individual base.

Additionaly the place is up on a hill where you have a 360 view over the whole valley, his wife is charming and the perfect host.

Visit to a wine farm
Sep 2019 • Friends
We were hosted and shown the vineyard by Mr. Monero and Catherine. They are the owners and very passionate about what they do. The place is beautiful and the host took us around the farm and shared nuggets of wisdom on how wine and olive oil is made. Everything is organic.
They are very hospitable and one of my most memorable experiences in Tuscany. Highly recommended.

Best Wine Tasting Experience EVER!!!
Jul 2019 • Friends
I travel several times a year to wine tastings everywhere and I have never had a better experience than here at Montechiari. Moreno and Catherine were charming! I was in Tuscany with a group and during our free time 3 of us took a taxi here.
While the 70 Euros we spent might seem expensive, it was worth it. We were there for over two hours.
It started with a very informative and thorough tour of the cellars and grounds with Moreno. Next, we enjoyed a tasting of their Brut on the terrace overlooking the pool with some snacks. Then we were led down to their tasting room and tasted 4 more wines, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Merlot (my favorite) and Cab. Every wine was delicious. We were also served crostini with three different toppings, olives from their property, their own olive oil with bread for dipping, and delicious Pecorino cheese. And they kept bringing us more food and pouring more wine. Catherine played the piano, they both visited with us the entire time, and the time was relaxing and enjoyable. No rushing at all. The views are gorgeous. The property sits on top of a hill, so there are incredible views in every direction.
I believe you do need to make a reservation for this experience, and I'm not sure if there is a group limit.
I will definitely return to visit them again if I'm in the area!

Nothing short of a perfect place to visit
Sep 2018 • Couples
Moreno and Catherine are the owners and hosts of an experience that was worth the time. We did have a guide that made the arrangements so not sure if you can just show up without a reservation. I don't think so.

The wines were very good and the hosts were awesome and charming. The views of the area were stunning while sharing glasses of wine and sparkling wine.

See if you can fit this stop into your schedule.

Stunning Tuscan venue, wonderful hosts, but a very expensive "tasting"
Jul 2017 • Couples
Our group of three American couples spent several days near Lucca during our Italian holiday and had eagerly looked forward to visiting Fattoria di Montechiari based on recommendations from friends who'd been there multiple times previously. On arrival, we were blown away by the setting...a drop-dead gorgeous restored villa and winery on a hilltop overlooking Tuscany, the Apennines, and with the Apuan Alps in the distance. Moreno and Catherine are charming hosts and make their guests feel very welcome.

After a thorough tour of the winery we were served olives and the vineyard's best offering -- a sparkling wine -- on a beautiful shaded terrace overlooking the pool. It's really quite a stunning location and raised our expectations even higher for the tasting to come.

That tasting itself, however, was quite a bit different from what I've experienced elsewhere in France, Italy, or North America. It really isn't a tasting as much as it is a very wine-heavy food-light brunch. The starting point is a nice selection of canapés arranged in front of each guest, and while it's not anything close to a full lunch, it certainly qualifies as medium (though not heavy) hors d'oeuvres.

The winery's main four non-sparkling wines were brought out one at a time but opened and served in rapid succession. Before you've really had a chance to decide what you think of the Chardonnay or sample the canapés, you find yourself staring at four full glasses of wine (including Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet).

The servings are more than healthy...again, this isn't a "tasting". There's also no bucket for disposing of "extra" wine, confirming the idea that you're not tasting...you're here to drink. Mind you, none of this should be interpreted as if we were complaining...we came for the wine! The wines themselves aren't life-changing but certainly better than average...the Sangiovese was my favorite although the Cabernet was quite nice as well. And the canapés were tasty. That said, it's not a meal and isn't presented as such.

We weren't rushed and enjoyed a leisurely hour or more nibbling and drinking our wine on a warm Italian afternoon. There was another group touring so Moreno's time was divided but we didn't lack for attention. Including the tour and a bit of dallying at the tail end our total visit was probably 2-3 hours.

I'll say up front that it's really our fault for not having done sufficient research prior to our arrival, but given our friends' enthusiastic recommendation we didn't feel the need to perform a lot of due diligence. So it was only after first placing a ridiculously large order for wine from the vineyard, that we were frankly stunned to discover that the price for the "tasting" was yet another €70 per person.

Yeah, yeah...I know prices for tastings in Napa have gone up but this was quite a shock and very unexpected, especially in Europe. I've spent less than this at restaurants in Paris and Rome for better meals and similar quantities of wine (per person). Most recently having spent two weeks last year in the Piedmont region of Italy and visiting a number of very high quality wineries there, I certainly wouldn't recommend Montechiari if a typical or authentic boutique Italian wine tasting is what you're looking for.

On the other hand, if it's an afternoon drinking generous quantities of wine in a beautiful Tuscan location you're after -- and are aware of and don't mind the cost -- Montechiari has much to offer. Just go into it with your eyes open.

Picture Perfect
Sep 2016 • Couples
It was actually about two years ago that my family and I had the pleasure of ending our wine tour day at Montechiari. We were close to skipping it, having had a long day visiting other vineyards, but our tour guide (who was also the owner of the villa we rented) was insistent that we would love it.

He wasn't wrong. We were blown away the minute we drove in. It is absolutely picture perfect tuscany. The hosts were so kind, generous, and seemed to truly enjoy the experience of taking us around the property and then pouring their wines to try, as well as bringing out delicious bites of food. The sparkling wine was such a hit that upon returning to the states we ordered a case!

Highly recommend a visit to this beautiful location. Enjoy the charismatic couple, ask lots of questions on the tour, and definitely ask for a taste of the unbelievably delicious olive oil, too! 5 stars all around!

Montechiari - not to be missed
Sep 2016 • Couples
We visited Montechiari on the recommendation of our accomodation provider Paola at Lucca Holiday Homes. The property is set on top of the hill at Montecarlo about 20 minutes south west of Lucca. The 360 degree view across the valley to the hills with the mountains is stunning and worth the trip in itself. The buildings have been completely renovated and are beautifully finished.

We were hosted by the owners Moreno & Catherine Panattoni and they were indeed very friendly and attentive hosts. We were taken on a tour of the winery, sipped sparkling pinot noir accompanied by delicious home made olives in the loggia overlooking the valley and then a wine tasting with canapes in the tasting room.

There were two other small groups with a total of 9 people. Each of the groups was set at separate tables for privacy . The tasting was very personal and Moreno was a font of knowledge not only about his wines but Italy in general and wines from around the world.

The canapes were beautifully done. Not a large meal but perfect for the wine tasting. There was also a tasting of the very good olive oil they produce. All finished with an aged Sardinian pecorino. The wines are produced under organic certification and are very good. They are relatively expensive by Italian standards but of very good quality.

The "degustation" cost 60 euros per person which may seem expensive but for my wife and I the ambience of the property, the stunning view and the wonderful hospitallty of Moreno & Catherine made this a day to remember.

If you are contemplating a visit I recommend you book the "degustation" as I feel this is what they do best. And if you are staying in Lucca I suggest getting a taxi there and back as the tastings are very generous.

It was just a little slice of Tuscan heaven really. The food and wine were delicious. The olive oil was like none we've ever tasted and the hosts were kind and extremely gracious. Easily the highlight of our day trip in Tuscany. Highly recommend. Christine & James

Took this tour from a cruise excursion and it was an hour and a half from port and wine wasn't good at all! Don't book the wine tasting and in Tuscany from royal Caribbean!

Expensive!
Aug 2014 • Couples
I am fortunate enough to have experienced a lot of winetasting establishments in the Montecarlo area, and they have all been wonderful.
When we arrived at Fattoria Montechiari we were blown away with the beauty of the place and were sat down and were allowed to sample a couple of wines, myself and my sister in law tried 3 varieties and my husband and brother 2. The wine was expensive so we ordered just 2 bottles to take away with us, a magnum of sparkling wine at €42 and a bottle of Merlot for €30. We were there lass than half an hour and consumed very little in the form of the tasters. On payment we were told we must pay an additional €40 for the tasting, in my previous experience this has always been free. Very disappointed.
Then to make matters worse when we decided to treat ourselves to the magnum a few days later, after storing it correctly and at the right temperature, it pretty much exploded on opening and we lost close to half on the floor!! VERY disappointed! I would not recommend anyone go here as prices are not transparent, the wine is average and not superior to other wineries in the area.
