Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stop here to marvel at the amazing facade of this church. So much artwork and detail. Even if you don't go inside, the incredible exterior is very much worth a visit.

Excellent place! Recommended for families with young children. We love it and not so far away from Florence. You can combine your trip with places around.

San Michele in Foro is a Roman Catholic basilica located where the ancient Roman Forum once stood. It has a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the incredibly beautiful facade deserves attention. It consists of four levels of loggias with series of sculptures and inlays along with columns of multi coloured marble. Some rows of columns form beautiful blind arcades. At the top is a 4 meter tall statue of St. Michael the Archangel, who was originally the patron saint of this church. This is perhaps the finest example of the region's Pisan-Luccan architecture. The inside of the church, however, is not quite as impressive and feels a bit empty and desolate. There are still some highlights such as a Madonna wirh Child by Andrea della Robbia. The place where this church stands is very lively and inviting and I can highly recommend stopping here for a while and taking in the special atmosphere that the old city of Lucca offers.

The outside of this church is spectacular with its ornate design and colours, the frontage looks particularly good from a side view . Vert detailed masonry and carvings. Beautiful craftsmanship

The exterior of the church is a spectacular confection of carvings and statues which gleam in the sun. The interior is lovely but slightly less spectacular in comparison to the exterior, but well worth a visit.

The outside of the church is STUNNING - the front entrance wall, with all its detail is a sight to behold!!
The inside looks like most other churches of the era, but an oddity is at its core. There, on full display, is a mummified saint in a glass case! his hand is raised in blessing, but poor thing, he's missing a few fingers.
It creeped me out but fascinated the kids - ages 5 and 8. They still talk about the weird mummy in the old church!!

Stopped for a quick drink in this central piazza. Lovely staff, quick drinks, and a great spot to break up exploring the city.

It is worth visiting this church even just for the outside, with its four orders of loggias and the statue of San Michele on the top. There are many legends about this place (such as the fact that there is an emerald in the statue of St. Michael and that sometimes you can see it shining at night, or the stories about the faces in the columns). Definitely recommended.
