Great Archaeological Find
Oct 2020
Visiting Domus Romana was great. The House of the Child of the Dolphin was discovered in 2010 and gives a glimps of the 2000 year history of Lucca.
Tours are available in English.

I Loved this Little Museum
Jan 2020
The docent did not speak perfect English but he tried very hard to show us all the exhibits. There is a wonderful little video. And you can just sit there and take in the fact that these stones have been here since the Romans put them there.

Our Highlight
Dec 2019
We had a terrific University Intern give us our private tour. We arrived shortly after the museum opened. She truly loved her home town, Lucca, and felt honored to be an Intern. She deserves an A for her semester work. Her conversations & education about how to understand archeology was terrific. We visited four museums after her one hour tour. What she taught us made us understand so much more about Ancient Italy, throughout our next two weeks.

not just a visit, an inspiration

This house is a tribute to a local resident and historian who showed us round, Find out why this month is a special one. When she tells you you will be filled with admiration.
Only takes 30 minutes, it will stay with you far longer

Hidden gem!
Oct 2019 • Couples
My partner and I stumbled on these great museum as we walked through the streets of Lucca. Before you are shown around the museum you’re shown a short 10-15min video of the history of the house and why it’s such an important historical location. The video gives information about the house as well as Lucca, including the history of the original Roman walled city which was very interesting and gave us a better insight to Lucca. Once we left we were able to appreciate the surroundings with more insight.

After the video the curator Martina gave us a personal guided tour of the house. The history and information she gave was amazing. A fantastic guide and a very friendly and genial lady. Martina’s passion for the history and ongoing conservation of the Domus was clear. The main display shows original Roman brickwork and clear underground pipeways for waste water and underfloor heating! Romans were very advanced it seems! You can also see evidence of at least 4 distinct periods in the brickwork which is unique to this location and amazing to see.

The house is currently undergoing some small work to prepare for the arrival of the Roman artefacts which were originally only covered there and have since been stored and catalogued away from the house. Such exciting times for the museum to have these pieces restored to where they were found.

Overall a wonderful place to visit and I would highly recommend if you are in Lucca on a day trip.

Hidden treat

Tucked away in a side street is this small museum.

Probably only needs a 30 minute visit but you get a 10 minute film; interesting relics and attentive staff. At only 3 euros it is well worth a visit

Interesting, hidden gem

Small museum below ground level displaying 2000 years of Lucca history, from Roman through medieval to present day. After an 8-minute introduction video, our very pleasant and knowledgeable host Giuseppe gave a personal tour of the premises. We also learned where to spot Roman-age remains in modern-day Lucca. A must-go for a bargain price of 3 euro.

Great interpretive film at the beginning with English subtitles followed by a very knowledgeable guide taking you through the history of the roman town, the excavation of the house, subsequent building and artefacts. At €3, it is obviously very good value and well worth visiting.

Worth a visit

This is a private run small insight to the history of lucca city. It only costs €3. It is hard to find but worth it if you are in lucca for more than a day. We were welcomed in, sat in a mini cinema, watched a very professional short film on the history of lucca with English subtitles, then had an enthusiastic and informative tour of the small indoor ruin. This was an excellent short break from roaming the streets of lucca
