About
LIS is a school of Italian language and culture located in the city center, in a very nice building with a large garden and a terrace in front of the city walls. We offer group courses and individual classes of Italian for students any age and level, and recreational activities (like excursions, cooking lessons, bike trips, seminaries on Italian cinema or music). Our mission is to provide our students, beside teaching them our language, with a practical and enjoyable experience of our way of life, aiming at a mutually enriching cultural exchange.

excellent school, fab homestay, great experience
Nov 2019
I had a wonderful time in Lucca. I stayed the whole month of November and attended LIS every weekday and went on all the after school outings. Grazie Angelo! It was a fabulous month. The teachers and administrators are really supportive and it is so much fun. The city is really interesting and my homestay host was awesome. I was really lucky to be included in social outings and there was always lots of conversation. The location is excellent also - I went to Florence, Pisa, Montecatini Terme and Cinque Terre on weekends. Being a football fan i also went to a Lucchese FC game with friends I met in Lucca. I guess I should mention that I learned a lot of italian! my language skills and confidence went way up for sure.

Great Italian school
Oct 2019
I’ve taken class at LIS for the past 5 years, 2-3 weeks at a time. The class in immersive and the teachers are skilled, friendly and innovative. Class is practical, designed for daily needs and conversation. There are also planned activities, from cooking, to trips to local museums or other important features. There’s also tour of the town of Lucca in the beginning of the sessions, which is very helpful for first time visitors. Angelo, Eva and Daniela are so kind and helpful. As a solo traveler I have seen their hospitality and help to students beyond the class. I intend to return again this year, would recommend it to the beginner and the advanced learner! Call or video chat with questions.

I had a wonderful time at the Lucca Italian School; I learned a ton of Italian and made some great friends. I absolutely love the communicative method that they use for language teaching. Can’t wait to go back!!

More than just a language school - a full programme of activities
Nov 2019 • Solo
This is the best Italian language school I have been to so far. All the staff are warm and welcoming and teaching programmes ( mornings) in small groups are well organised while being relaxed and unintimidating. You are encouraged to participate in afternoon activities and to speak Italian outside the class with fellow students which becomes a completely normal thing to do. I was there sadly for for one week only - with afternoon activities focussed on Olive Oil production, tasting, cooking, which has given me a completely new understanding of l’olio d’oro. The school can organise homestay accommodation if required. Lucca itself, even in rainy November, was stunning. I can wholeheartedly recommend the school, and will be returning there for sure.

Amazing School
Jul 2019 • Solo
I studied at LIS for two weeks in July 2019 and couldn't speak more highly of it. The school is in a beautiful old building, super easy to find and the classes were a joy to attend.

I believe my teachers name was Ilara and she was brilliant. The structure of the classes made learning fun and the hours flew by!

Lucca is a beautiful place with so much to offer I would highly recommend this school.

A wonderful experience
Nov 2019 • Couples
My husband and I spent 3 weeks studying at LIS. We had a one week break after the first week (this worked well) and then did 2 weeks straight, with the special olive oil course in our last week. The teachers were experienced, intelligent, flexible and dedicated. We learnt and saw so much, particularly how to cook local Tuscan foods, and all the Italian learning in context reinforced the class learning. My previously one dish partner is now keen to try out his newfound interest in the kitchen, and we have a hiday rich in language and in memories to recall with easure when work gets a little too demanding.
Great school, lovely buildi g, fascinating small city. Highly recommended.

A Month of Italian Classes
Sep 2019
I am currently spending a month at Lucca Italian School. All new students arrive on Mondays, complete a form and have a short interview with a member of staff. Then it’s time for a coffee while staff sort out classes. The first week the school was relatively quiet and I was in a class with one other student. The last two weeks the school has been full and there have been seven students in my class. I have felt the placement was right for me. Teachers are very enthusiastic and happy to explain anything that is unclear, firstly in Italian and if it is still unclear, they will use English. Classes run from 9.15 till 1am and there is a 25 minute break in the middle of the morning. Most students are mature age and accommodation options range from homestays, B&Bs or apartments or private rentals organised by the students themselves. I am loving my time in Lucca and would happily recommend this school to other students.

Look no further: Exceptionally well-run school
Sep 2018
This school is hard to beat. I was a student for two weeks at the LIS and I would recommend it to anyone. The school is highly organized and the instruction is excellent. Placement is done by individual interview and is effective. Class size was restricted and in my case ranged from 6-11 during one of the most popular months of the year. I was assigned the same teacher throughout the course and this was very useful for continuity. I consider myself a serious adult learner, so I was keen to have an organized, but flexible instructor. Our teacher, Agnese, was excellent. Always prepared, always encouraging, and always ready to answer questions, I truly enjoyed being a student in her class. I think most people felt comfortable choosing how hard they wanted to work and it all worked out well. After class, in the afternoons there is usually an activity that is available to all students. If the activity involves travel to another city, there are costs associated with the transport.

As far as Lucca, it is a great place to learn. Small, and not overwhelming, it is a bit touristic, but not particularly so in the off season. It is a beautiful city, with a gorgeous city wall that functions as an all-purpose public park or a sort-of Italian High Line. Wide enough for cars, it’s great for walking, riding bikes, and jogging—a lovely feature.

As an adult I’ve attended 4 different language schools, 2 in Italy. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend all of them, but LIS is a definite yes. The only comment I have is that the population seemed to be comprised of mostly retirees in late September. This was not an issue, it was just different from other schools I’ve been to. Still, if I am lucky enough to study Italian again I would certainly want to return to the LIS. Thanks so much!

A very professional organisation offering a range of classes and cultural visits to suit all levels. Brillante!
Jan 2019 • Family
I spent 3 months at the school doing a mix of group and individual lessons.
All the teacher were very well qualified experienced and the atmosphere in the school was the perfect balance of professionalism care and fun.
All students are interviewed and graded and placed in an appropriate group or individual lesson when they arrive. The groups range from two to a maximum of ten and classes usually last for four hours in the morning or individual lessons of two hours.
There are individual lessons offered in the afternoons as well an interesting range of visits to local sites and places of historic, cultural or natural interest. These tours are a minimum of four students and the places selected are usually less obvious, the sort of place a local friend living in the area would take you too. The afternoon visits are also conducted solely in Italian and often conclude with an aperitif! If you come to the school make sure you take advantage of the tours they are inexpensive interesting and very enthusiastically undertaken.
Overall I had a great experience at the school and can’t recommend it highly enough.
Very professional and great people willing to accommodate students.
