Great experience, opportunity to taste so many different dishes, excellent entertainment
May 2018 • Couples
We went to the teatro del sale not quite knowing what to expect. It was an experience that I can highly recommend. It's a "club" that you can become a member of at the door.
It is a buffet where what is on offer is continuously changing. The typical anti-pasta dishes remain available all evening while a continuous stream of dishes are announced very loudly and with great fanfare by the chef as they become availlable. There were various pastas, roast chicken, different types of fish and shell fish. Finally chocolate cake and ice-cream with coffee. Wine and water were on tap and you help yourself to as much as you want. After the food was finished the tables were cleared and we were treated to a clarinet and chello duo. Both artists were fantastic. Wonderful evening. I highly recommend it.

Not what you think it is
Dec 2017 • Family
This restaurant-show "experience" is not the authentic, low-on-glitz, big-on-quality gig you might think it is. What it is is a masterclass in taking your customers for granted.

I should first of all say that I am a Florentine, so I am not rating this as a tourist but as someone who understands the wider context and is very familiar with the restaurant scene of Florence.

The setting looks attractive from the outside, but the restaurant itself, concealed behind a big red curtain, is a big, soulless room with bare walls. Before you can even enter, you have to join as a member, which costs 11 euros. Apparently they have many thousands of "members", but I don't know how many have ever come back.

The service is shocking, the staff perfunctory, officious and disinterested. Dinner consists of various rounds of food being laid out on a large table, where everyone has to jostle to fill their plate, or is served out of a side window, where you need to queue up. A bust and painting of Karl Marx adorn the kitchen on the other side.

The food itself is utterly unremarkable, and some of our dishes were decidedly low-quality. Coffee is also self-service, in the foyer, where unless you've worked as a barista you need to persuade a member of staff to help you work the machine.

Water and wine are on tap in the foyer. But there's a twist - you're not actually allowed to fill a carafe of wine: you can only fill one glass at a time. Carafes are only for water. I guess they don't want the guests consuming too much of whatever wine they've decided to let us have.

There is no show until AFTER dinner, which in our case was a whole two hours later. When eventually it is time for the show, the staff come out and unceremoniously clear the room, literally taking tables away from in front of you and replacing them with a row of chairs.

As for the ambience, there is none. No music, no nice lighting, no atmosphere. If there is an ambience it is much closer to that of a workhouse than a cabaret.

What they've done here is basically take the model typical of the various "circoli" in Italy (socialist community centres) and repackage it for tourists and the well-to-do, putting a big spin on it and hiking the prices up to match. You feel like you're being held hostage for the duration of the dinner. You're not rubbing shoulders with the locals here, because the locals don't come here - it's tourists, corporate types and people like me who thought they'd be getting more show, better food and less ideology.

The whole thing has the feel of a culinary experience in the USSR. If that's what you want, then this is the place for you. If not, don't massage their ego by going along.

Unique experience that makes for a very memorable evening
Oct 2017 • Couples
Visit for dinner and rub shoulders with locals in this unique restaurant/canteen/theatre experience. Expect high quality buffet style food, plenty of theatre from the kitchen, before finishing the evening with a live performance on the stage in the dining area.
Arrive early pay Eu7 per head to become a member for the year, and Eu30 per head for food. The take your seat and wait for the chef to announce from the kitchen that the first course is ready, then get your elbows out and battle with locals for servicing a excellent Tuscan food.
Once the food is finished (around 21:30) the seating is quickly re-jigged and a performance will start. Excellent unique dinning experience.

A play in three acts.
May 2017
ACT 1 Having duly collected our 2x7 Euro, non - resident membership cards and reserved our places for dinner, we wandered off to enjoy a day exploring Florence, Later ,having spruced up, we arrived back at approximately 19.15 hours to enter " The World of Picchi". The Teatro del Sale is part dining experience, part theatre and part watching other peoples reactions to what is going on around them .The whole atmosphere is theatrical from the layout of the foyer, its décor ,wood panelled walls and enticing smells wafting from the kitchen. A gentle buzz of anticipation was in the air. Act 2. Its a simple but effective formula. A buffet table is set out and food is served from it , or later ,through the kitchen window . You go up when the Chef yells out what is ready to eat and collect your plates. This continues until all the dishes are served. Red wine and water are on tap through out the meal. Dessert and coffee , served in the foyer, finish off the meal. The staff enter into the general good humour of the evening all adding to its convivial vibe. Act 3 All the tables are put back against the walls and the chairs re- arranged to form a semi-circle around the stage. You choose your seat and on with the show! This varies throughout the year. We had a fabulous evening and will certainly re-new our membership next time we go to Florence . We loved the informality , the food and the feeling of being in someone elses world. As a visitor to a foreign city you so rarely have this kind of opportunity. Magic!

two shows in one
Apr 2016 • Couples
This is a fun members club with food and live entertainment. 5 euros membeship good for a year. Show one is the visible kitchen watching the cooks as they prepare the local hearty dishes. There is a buffet and then the fun starts as the next dish is served by the cooks shouting out what it is and and every runs over to sample the new dish. All you can drink self serve house wine and mineral water. Various hot breads to accompany the the various dishes. Hint: You may be tempted to load up your plate but I suggest small servings so that you will have room to taste all the different dishes. Show two at night after dessert varies. We saw a one woman comededic entertainer who was masterfull in pantomine so that even though we do not understand Italian we laughed a lot and had a great time.
There are staff who can help explain what the various dishes are in English.
This is a reasoanablly priced local food and entertinment adventure away from the more expensive commercial touristy venuues.

A waste of money , go somewhere where tourists are treated better
May 2016 • Couples
We went to this as a group of ten people. We were in Florence for 12 days and thought we would use the "membership" to eat some meals there . You have to buy a membership to have the experience. We should have reconsidered but...We had a breakfast there that was good. We decided to go for dinner and it was crowded, and disorganized , there were people in our group who spoke Italian and some who didn't. There are reviews that rave about cooks yelling that a dish was ready and people line up to get a serving.seriously? It was annoying, not at all relaxing and if you were not aggressive enough they ran out. The worst show was to come- Maria Cassi on stage. Silly, over acted and she was supposed to be a big shot actress . OMG THE WORST show ever. We left because even the Italians in our group said it was pathetic. There was a clear preference for locals over tourists in our treatment. By the way this Maria Cassi and her husband own the place so the show will go on. So don't waste your money and go somewhere else.

Amazing time
May 2016 • Friends
Great food that just keeps coming. Pace yourself! We couldn't understand what most of the food was, but it didn't matter because it was all delicious! Plus, not knowing is half the fun! The night we were there, the show was a trio of musicians who were fantastic! They played all types of different music from around the world. They were great. Overall one of my favorite experiences in Italy!
