Very unique gardens in Florence
Aug 2020
The gardens of the Torrigiani family are hidden away but I cannot urge travellers to Florence strongly enough to book a tour. The nurseries are wonderful, I walked over fields of mint, climbed to the top to see the folly tower, Vieri is a fabulous host and the bar is open in the evenings from 6pm. It is a magical place a short walk from the city centre. Do seek it out - you will be enthralled, as I was.,

Visiting Giardino Torrigiani is a rare opportunity to see behind the walls and into a beautiful private garden unlike anything else. Giardino Torrigiani is the largest privately owned garden in Florence and allegedly the largest private city garden in Europe. The property spans over 16 acres (feels larger) and is packed with fine examples of mature specimen trees and hedgery, a flower and herb filled formal garden dotted with potted citrus, new and old greenhouses, numerous private family residences, a bed and breakfast, roses, hydrangeas, iris, bits of sculpture and an impressive tower banked by a soft rolling hill which gives the illusion of a garden that never ends.
The most interesting side note is the creativity and resourcefulness of the family/owners who have managed to meticulously preserve the property and retain ownership through hosting music performances, events, private tours and other activities.
We enjoyed our special time with the owner and the very personal glimpse of the spectacular garden.
If you would like to visit the garden, it is imperative to book ahead as tours are limited by the owners schedule and commitments.

Something Very Special
Jun 2018 • Couples
This garden can be seen by appointment in the very sensible late afternoon when the quality of light is magical and the hot summer sun won't interfere with your stroll around the property. The extended family in residence in what is the largest private garden in central Florence has been here for many years. The character, personality and history are evident throughout and Vieri Torrigiani Malaspina, our gracious host and guide adds greatly to one's appreciation of the property. The nursery, greenhouse, gardens, statues, follies, plants, lawns and specimen trees are a delight and we felt privileged to observe this very personal perspective of Florence. Please be encouraged to email him through the website as you can be assured of a happy memory from your time here.

Nicer than Boboli

After our visit to Boboli Gardens we decided to try Torrigiani gardens as they are almost next door . Well worth it and nicer than Bobolini if you have to chose between them

Old world charm
Apr 2017 • Family
Private tour of the family's estate gardens. The gardens are beautiful with mature plantings, sculptures, follies, walls, a tower, nursery and much more. Our charming guide, Vieri Torrigiani Malaspsina, grew up on the private estate and shared the history of the property and the development of the gardens. You are transformed to an earlier time and his stories bring to life the comings and goings of a former era. After our tour we chatted over tea in his historic home. A very enjoyable and memorable afternoon. Arrangements for the tour must be made in advance.

Entertaining tour by charismatic marquis; creative solutions to keeping family estate
May 2014 • Couples
My husband and I visited Giardino Torrigiani in May 2014 as part of a Tauck tour. This garden was a memorable highlilght of our trip. My favorite aspect of the garden tour was the entertaining presentation by the Marquis Vanni Torrigiani. He is funny, extroverted, informative, casual and not at all pretentious. He might be in his 30's or 40's. He took us on a stroll around the various sections of the garden: lawns with scuptures, formal flower beds, hilly forest bordered by the old Roman wall and an old stone tower, the historic buildings that have been in his family for centuries, etc. As we walked, the Marquis told us about all the creative ways the Torrigiani family has preserved the large family estate intact, despite Italy's high property taxes. They offer garden tours and classes for the community. They raise herbs for restaurants. They offer a lovely site for weddings and big parties for the glitterati. Different branches of the family live in the large historic manor houses on the property. Vanni gave up his law practice to help his father run the Torrigiani gardens. He does not shy away from work: mowing the huge lawns, maintaining the rose garden, guiding group tours of the property, etc. He clearly enjoys what he does. Touring the Giardino Torrigiani gave me a sense of what it was like for the old wealthy Florentine families who had big estates on the outskirts of the urban center. While we were there, a caterer gave us a cooking lesson. We rolled out pasta dough and made ravioli; then we made a dessert. We ate a tasty lunch (the same menu, but prepared by the caterer). We spent a lovely several hours at this garden.

A real holiday treat!
Apr 2012 • Family
The tour of the garden was as lovely as the garden itself. One of the owners takes you through the garden explaining areas, plants, flowers, trees and their history. How his family has lived in these beautiful grounds for generations and how the most special people, such as Michelangelo, have had a hand in making the garden. There is so much history to savour in Giardino Torrigiani as there are trees, plants and flowers. A real gem in the heart of Florence and a real holiday treat.
