Elegant square
Jan 2020 • Solo
This is an absolutely elegant square especially with the Santa Maria Novella being the main attraction. This is a very nice and lively plaza where one can sit and have a snack or icecream. Most people just sit around and enjoy the scenery.
100% recommend.

Nice enough
Dec 2019
This is a nice little plaza with some obelisks across from the Santa Maria Novella Church. There are benches to rest on and some cafes around it. Not really a destination.

Large Square Across From Train Station
Feb 2020 • Solo
One of the larger squares in Florence. It is anchored by the Basilica of the same name which is a must-see. There are plenty of places to sit. Seems to be a popular area. Across from the train station.

Stunning church and art
Oct 2019
Absolutely exquisite cathedral with stunning art. Central to find. Lots to see, which was unexpected by its size. One of my favorite cathedrals we visited.

Safe anytime of day. Scorching in the summer months with lack of shade due to absence of tall buildings to the west.
Jun 2019
Even if you’re In Florence for a short while, at some point you’ll end up walking along this Piazza, especially if you’re staying in lodgings near to the train station like the many guest houses along Largo Fratelli Alinari.

This Piazza gets very hot in the afternoon as it is wide open and does not receive shade due to the absence of tall buildings on the western side. So whilst there are several outdoor cafes, each with its own water misters in the summer months, it is not the most ideal place for an afternoon refreshment.

You’re better off relaxing along the shaded side streets to the East of the Piazza until the sun starts setting.

Topped by the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella with the beautiful green 'serpentino' and white marbles synonymous with other iconic religious structures in the heart of Florence, this is still a lovely little piazza to stroll through and safe at any time of day.

Nice Piazza
Sep 2019
Open space with places to sit and space to relax. Some hawkers who just want to be your friend, apparently. But feels safe as people about.

Wonderful open Piazza near the Train Station
Sep 2019
Pleasant open space affording a nice view of the Santa Maria Novella church. Nearby restaurants are found on the ancient narrow streets. Easy walking distance from the Train Station and the oldest pharmacy in Europe.

Nice square to enjoy the surroundings
Oct 2019
Not far from the train station is this square located. It is mostly known because of the Santa Maria Novella. You can relax here for a bit and enjoy the surroundings. There are also several restaurants located on the border of the square. There is a relaxing vibe here.

FORMER RACETRACK
Apr 2019
One of the main squares of Florence, located close to the train station is guarded over by Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. The square dates from the late 13th century and was utilized, as a racetrack for the Palio dei Cocchi with the 2 obelisks used as the turns for the race. Looking at the obelisks each is topped with a Florentine lily and rest upon the backs of 4 turtles. Large areas of green break up the large expanse. A very nice place to sit and admire the façade of the Basilica.

Open, quiet place
Sep 2019 • Couples
This is so large that you can find peace and quiet even though the main station is only around the corner. There are restaurants along one side and the delightful basilica at the end. A strange sculpture in the centre with lively floral displays make it very photogenic.
