The plaza is a great place to spend time admiring the David without the crowds at the Gallery. Its situated in a good location with many options for eats, sightseeing and shopping. The only down side is that there is not much seating available.
We walked up to Piazzale Michelangelo, from street level at Saint Nicholas gate. The route up gives wonderful opportunities to stop and take photos of the amazing views of Florence. It also provided the chance to catch your breath!!! The route up is steep, but...More

Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides
visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!
Yes can sit outside and drink wines.
trouble always finds its way around but just be aware!
walked nearly everywhere. from the bridge to top of the piazza about 30-45mins.
I hope you enjoy it all in firenza.

I took a golf cart tour service called Verde Oliva. It lasted about 90 to 120 minutes and we got to see the main attractions all over Florence. One of them was Piazzale MIchelangelo. The driver knew the best spot for pictures and was a great paparazzi too. I would ask them to finish the tour up there, bring a bottle of wine, cups and some treats. Watch the sunset up there, then walk down to town (it only takes 20 minutes and it is a beautiful walk).
