In this piazza you will find the duomo cathedral and the tower. The church is very nice inside and is worthwhile the visit also the tower is worth to pay to climb the more than 300 steps to have a view of the city.

I am personally not keen on the style of the Duomo which "too much". I prefer Santa Croce. Anyway the work perform to build the duomo, the campanile and the baptistery is amazing. The place itself it not particularly impressive if you remove the duomo.

We went to the Duomo on a very hot day and that likely dampened our experience some. We waited in the piazza while the guys stood in line. People watching was fun.

The queues to get in the Duomo snake round the square would guess at least 3 hours to get in. We just took the external view .

Beware some really nasty female beggars/pickpockets posing as living statues (whited up). They try to shake hands - don't!

Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by
an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city.
The historic center is characterized by the immensity
of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the
brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does
not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni
Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is
enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city

You can visit it any time of the day. The restaurants in the piazza are open till late and you can always walk down the nearby roads and find lots of stalls for road side shopping.
