Dont waste money for entry inside-the same view is from parking place and near basilica. It possible take this place by car or walk from city center.

Amazing views
Aug 2019
Just amazing views, plenty of parking and the Castle was interesting too - including the slightly odd exhibitions. A bit cooler if hot as higher up. Worth a quick stop.

waste of time and money!

The only good thing is the view you get from the top of the wall, but it's only slightly better than it is from the carpark or from the church below.
The fortress itself is rundown and offers no historical information. There was a photographic exhibition, but to be honest I could not care less about; I don't go to medieval town to look at modern photos and contemporary art.
For what it offers, entrance should be free.

High Point of Cortona (literally)

Worth the trip up the hill to the Fortezza to take in the views and a great lunch in the cafe, really good value.

Great view

The fort is a great location to admire the view which is breathtaking. The fort is as high above Cortona as you can go and from there you can admire and appreciate the size of Lake Trasimeno and see the straight roman roads. There is an admission fee of €5 each person which, if you’re expecting loads to see in terms of artefacts etc., then you’ll be disappointed. But you can walk along the ramparts and see for miles. The cafe is good. Food and drink can be bought and it’s good quality and not expensive. Seating is both outside or inside which is air conditioned. I’d definitely recommend it for the view alone.

Great views of the Chiana valley
May 2019 • Friends
The fortress is now a temporary exhibits place. The key point is the magnificent views of the Chiana valley and Lake Trasimeno.

The price of admission is 5 Euros, so worth supporting the arts for a great view and exploration of the place

Great Views
Sep 2018 • Family
It was worth climbing up for the views. There was lots of photography art displayed which was a nice addition to the fort itself. Although we did not eat at the cafe, it was nice to know that we could grab a bite to eat and have a drink if we wanted to.

Great view
Sep 2018 • Friends
The fortress was built in the 16th century by the grand duke of Tuscany, Cosimo Medici, at the ruins of the old Etruscan, Roman and medieval fortifications. It is in a very good shape, recently restored, but the main reason for visiting is the beautiful view over the valley.

Views are worth the climb
Aug 2018 • Family
We parked at the bottom of Cortona and started our walk to the top for the Fortress, it was a steep climb with many stairs but the reward of the views and feeling above everyone else is worth it, sadly a thunderstorm and torrential rain started as we got to the top so although we stepped out on the walkway we had to turn back as the lightning got too bad and we were soaked through. There is a bus that for a donation to local charities can take you the last part up or back down halfway, we didn't know about this but did find it welcome for going halfway back down due to the storm. The photography exhibition was interesting and we had a light lunch in the cafe which was really good value and tasty.

Amazing Views with Lake Tresimeno off in the distance.

High atop the hill of Cortona stands the Medici's fort. We walked up from the town, passed Chiesa Santa Margherita and found the Fortezza del Girifalco. Even though there is parking, it was well worth the walk up.
