We got on the old train at Giarre and the first leg climbing was nice. After Randazzo where we changed trains the view became spectacular because we could see the effects of the latest eruptions. When we got nearer to Catania it became less interesting....More

I took the recommendation of Mats L and did the trip anti-clockwise as the timetable seemed to work better that way. I took the train from Catania Centrale to Giarre-Riposto. As I had a bit of time I walked down to the FCE Riposto station...More

My dad planned this excursion and is helping with this review. We took a taxi (20 Euro one way) from our hotel to the Taormina train station. We then took a train to the Giarre-Riposto station - remember to validate your ticket on the platform....More

Having visited Catania a few years back I wanted to experience this journey through the little villages and towns near Mount Etna. I managed to convince my husband to come with me, as he is scared of heights. The train twists and turns through the...More

We used our last full day (of our 9 day Sicily holiday), a Monday, to travel from Borgo (Catania) to Randazzo really just for the trip rather than the destination. I'm a seasoned independent traveller and good with I.T. but try as I may I...More

We hopped on the train at Catania and went all the way round, joining the main line at Riposto, which was a lovely way to while away a few hours, looking at the scenery. The views of Etna are great and the surrounding areas, lava...More

We wanted to do both train and Alcantara gorge so did just the Randazzo-Riposto return in a morning. Efficient and time table online is correct. Great views and sounds of the train

This trip can be a nightmare. From Borgo/Catania station the train climbs for about 1 1/2 hours largely through tunnels - yes tunnels. You see nothing. Where it does emerge briefly all you will see is an industrial landscape, housing and roads. If you are...More

I started in Catania town on the metro - the ticket machine allows you to book the whole trip (including the metro) by pressing the "next station" button till you reach the maximum €7.90 single fare. At Borgo station, there's a station cafe - stock...More

It is a very different experience traveling by train round a volcano. The different views are interesting, the flora growing amongst the lava is beautiful. The cost of the full journey is really reasonable and as you can get off and on at different towns...More

And where it's in tunnel, on the old surface route you mostly saw the backs of houses. Still more interesting than the tunnels... You can use google earth to see where it used to go!

I think it goes a handful of times per day. Time table not available online to my knowledge - perhaps in Italian. Check at the station is recommended
