Great church
Sep 2021
Great church, with exuberant exterior well hiding the somber and somewhat bare medieval interior. Well worth a visit and the entry fee.

A nice church with a twist
Sep 2021 • Couples
Large catholic churches do tend to have similar features like the impressive archeology, the same motivs and patterns and are of course literally designed to be awe inspiring. This one is no exception.

The striking feature here is the inclusion of the old temple pillars in the building giving the opportunity for a lot of philosophical and historical thinking

Blending of many centuries of rule!
Sep 2021 • Couples
We had a tour guide show us telling us the blending of this Duomo. Most everything is an easy walking distance on the island of Ortegea and it is stepped in cultured history. Started with the Greeks then Roman's, the Bisi ten empire, Arabs from Africa, the Norman's ending with the statehood in the Italian Republic.

Beautiful, even if the interior is a little dark
Jun 2021
The Duomo is quite special because this is one of the oldest places of worship in Sicily. The builders were practical people. Why quarry stone if there are perfectly good ones in an old pagan temple?

Why move columns and stone for a new church, if the location of the temple is also good for a church?

This church was built in the 7th century A.D. inside the columns of the 5th Century B.C Greek Temple of Athena which were incorporated into its walls. They can be seen both inside and outside the Duomo.

The temple of Athena, which was built on top of a pre-Hellenic temple, was famous in its time. Plato and Athenaeus mention the temple, and the looting of its ornaments is mentioned by Cicero, in 70 BC, as one of the crimes of the governor Verres.

The church contains the relics of several saints including relics of St. Lucy, the patron saint of the city. They include bone fragments, a robe, a veil, and a pair of shoes. Twice a year on the first Sunday in May and on December 13, her feast day, a statue of Saint Lucy by sculptor Pietro Rizzo is brought out of the cathedral and paraded through the streets. The silver statue incorporates three fragments of her ribs within its chest.

The building was converted into a mosque in 878, then converted back when Norman Roger I of Sicily retook the city in 1085. The roof of the nave is of Norman origin, as well as the mosaics in the apses.

The cathedral was rebuilt, and the façade redesigned by architect Andrea Palma in 1725–1753 after the 1693 Sicily earthquake. The style is classified as High Sicilian Baroque, a relatively late example.

The inside is rather dark but there are several beautiful altars and beautifully decorated ceilings.

Note the intricately inlaid marble floors.

Beautiful Church in Old Temple to Athena
Jul 2021 • Couples
Beautiful Catholic church with some sections that date back to a Temple to Athena. Gorgeous artwork with incredibly old masonry. Chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy - the patron saint. Low fee (2 euro). Do ensure you research dress code as it sticks to the same rules as many other Italian churches. Small gift shop located near exit which has nice and reasonably priced gifts.

Beautiful cathedral

Very beautiful, both inside and outside. The square in which it is located is also very beautiful, but can be crowded with tourists.

Beautiful cathedral in the heart of Ortygia
Sep 2020 • Couples
Beautiful cathedral in a beautiful square. Beautiful just to sit there with a drink. Lots of lovely restaurants nearby but the cathedral is spectacular and unlike a lot of churches it is free to view and pay your respects
