Worth a visit
Sep 2021
At a corner of the cathedral square, this is a church that is well worth a quick visit. As with many churches in south-eastern part of Sicily, the Baroque interior feels a bit understated, but it is still quite beautiful.

The Smaller Church on Piazza Duomo
Jun 2021
This church shares Piazza Duomo with the much larger cathedral. It is still worth a visit for the beautiful altars and the art, including the Caravaggio painting Burial of St. Lucy.

A beautiful Church right on Piazza Duomo
Sep 2019
No doubt you'll be on this really beautiful Piazza.
Not only for the Duomo, for the Syracuse Cathedral, but for the Piazza itself which one of the Top spot in Syracuse, if not of all Sicily.
Therefore no doubt you'll walk by this Church and it would be a good idea to walk in.
Even for a short moment, which could be a deserved break to rest a little, especially during the hot Sicilian summer, even much hotter in this scalding white piazza.

A hidden gem
Jan 2020 • Family
After visiting the acclaimed Duomo, which is by the way beautiful continue your visit to the Church of Saint Lucia 'alla Badia', a hidden gem, not mentioned enough by the travel guides. It is beautifully painted, exquisitely tiled, elegant and hosts Caravaggio’s the Lucy’s Death... superb

Caravaggio!
Oct 2019
My first time seeing one of this painter's works in the setting it was commissioned for. Viewing it in the setting, with the ambient light, gave new meaning to the thought behind his work.

Small, baroque church in a lovely position.
Oct 2019
The church has a lovely position dominating one end of the Piazza Duomo. The view back across the square from here is perhaps the best of the square as a whole.

The church is a small baroque building with the expected decoration inside. The painted dome is lovely. Its claim to fame however is its Caravaggio which, though not amongst his better works, is still worth a look.

Patron Saint of Syracuse
May 2019
On the southern side of the Piazza del Duomo is a church, which looks quite modest from the outside, but which was also built in the Sicilian Baroque - as almost everything in southeastern Sicily - after the big earthquake of 1693. Officially the church is called 'Santa Lucia alla Badia', since it was originally the church of an abbey (badia) of Cistercian nuns.

Contrary to the nearby Duomo there is no entrance fee to visit, but photography is not allowed inside. There the main attraction is a painting by Caravaggio of the burial of Santa Lucia. What one mainly sees on it are the muscular bodies of two grave diggers and for me it is definitely not the best painting by this genial artist.

Inside I sat down to recap all I used to connect with Saint Lucy. Well, there was the Caribbean island of Santa Lucia I visited, but also the Sankta Lucia church celebrations in Sweden on December 13th, her nameday, when schoolgirls carry a light on their head (no more a lit candle). Reading about it this day used to be date of the winter solstice after the old calendar, and thus of special meaning in the long Scandinavian winters.

As the story goes Saint Lucy from Syracuse had been martyred here in the times of the persecutions under emperor Diocletian. She gets venerated as the patron saint of the poor, the blind, the repentant prostitutes and also of the town of Syracuse.

Lovely church and art
Sep 2019 • Family
Everyone comes for the Caravaggio and it’s wonderful. This also has a lot of artefacts connected to St. Lucia which are of interest.
The information signs are in both Italian and English which is great.
