This Carrara marble fountain is some 10 min walk from the main Duomo Sq., and is located by the sea. It's a beautiful fountain depicting Neptune, the God of Sea protecting Messina.

The committee of the Fountain of Neptune in 1556, marks the end of the decade of profitable business in Messina of Giovanni Montorsoli (Montorsoli, 1507c. - Florence, 1563), a pupil of Andrea Ferrucci from Fiesole and a follower of Michelangelo since his early stay in Rome . In fact, since ’47, he realized for the city, also thanks to the... More

This statue is on the outskirts of the town but can be found after a lovely stroll along the waterfront. A good place to sit and rest up before continuing to explore the area.

While I may be prejudiced because this sculpture was actually done by my grandfather's uncle, I thought it was great, and I enjoyed seeing it :) Having said that, I must say that it is in a very busy area in a very busy city. It is extremely difficult to drive in, or park in, Messina. If you can find... More

Before the earthquake it used to look over the city, with it's hand stretched towards the city in a protective gesture. However the earthquake which happened to have it's epicentre in the sea and thus caused a huge wave to crash into the city... More

Its a long trip from the Duomo to the Fontana di Nettuno, just a statue and a small fountain. Nothing special. Good to take a picture saying you were there.

La Fontana di Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) is a really beautiful sight if you get a chance to visit it (it is a little further north than the main attractions of Messina, such as the Duomo, Campanile, Teatro, etc). It is located at the north end of a lovely park plaza, and depicts the god Neptune blessing the city of... More
