Great view

Nice church with a fantastic view over Messina, the harbour and Calabria. If you like a beautiful view and the weather is good then this is the place to be.

This Santuario della Madonna di Montalto is a Catholic Church with amazing views and well worth the long walk up to it.

What'd ya know? A Roman Catholic Church in Italy. Yeah, I know. Cheeky. But this isn't just a church. It's one with a commanding view of the city and harbour. It has a small, local congregation; we visited during their mass. It is a nice walk up the steps to the church. But in the end, it's another Roman Catholic... More

We weren't able to go inside but the climb to the top was well worth it for the views and statues. Then walked around the back to Sacarino Cristo Re and enjoyed an espresso in the pretty cafe by the cathedral - lovely - look out for the parrot!

The walk up is quite exhausting especially in the summer heat but the view up there is lovely and very peaceful. There is a water fountain to refresh yourself and for a cool drink. The church itself is pretty from the inside and outside with colourful stained glass windows which give an even richer atmosphere to the inside of the... More

Did not have a chance to visit the interior but the veranda overlooking the straight of Messina makes for a great photo op and is a calm and quiet place to admire the view without crowds.

Walked up all the stairs and found this by accident. Views are lovely and you can sit and watch the cruise ships coming in. Church is pretty.

Messina was destroyed by earthquakes a couple of times, then bombed heavily, so it is not rich with interesting monuments. The Sanctuary is barely a century old, with only a few artworks, but the patio overlooking the city and the port is worth the short climb. Messina is not a beautiful city but its site is spectacular and the view... More

It is quite a climb to this place, but the view over Messina and the harbour in particular is great.
