This Cathedral, a fine example of Sicilian Norman architecture, has retained its original medieval lines even after a long history: built under Roger II, consecrated in 1197, destroyed in the 1908 earthquake and rebuilt.

After you have climbed the clock tower, seen the midday clockwork show, take sometime for quiet contemplation and enjoy the peace of the duomo. Remember this is a Catholic Church, so shoulders and knees should covered.

Everybody gathers outside at noon for some mechanical figures on the astronomical clock to move with sound effects blasting out of a speaker. Take the time to go into the cathedral and admire the beautifully decorated ceiling.

Having witnessed the non-event of the Astronomical Clock at noon, we visited this impressive building. Beautifully calm and cool, an oasis in the centre of town.
