We visited Sardinia in May and decided to follow the easiest option to visit the cave .. taking a boat operated by Linea Grotte Navisarda that leave from the Alghero’s harbour on a regular basis or from the pier of of Cala Dragunara in Porto Conte Park – cost Eur 15 – plus entrance to Grotto eur 13 -. Also note that this is by far the best method of visiting for anyone with children or elderly people.
The journey by boat takes about 40 minutes each way and the journey was great. We had great weather and fully enjoyed the scenery of the Coral Riviera. The boat passed close to the Cape Galera and Punta Giglio cliffs, round the tip of Capo Caccia to arrive right at the entrance to the caves which lie at the foot of a big cliff – an impressive sight set against the backdrop of the small island of Foradada.
There were no crowds and the visit was highlight of our trip. We bought ticket as we landed and there was a guided tour in English. The cave was magnificent. We had leisurely walk, enjoying views and taking numerous photos.
Note: the temperature inside is constant around 20°C. I suggest good walking shoes, it might be slippery.

This is a "must do" according to the tourist info but the best bit was the boat trip to and from the grotto!
The grotto is overcrowded, expensive (€10 admission), a mumbled guide which you can barely hear talking about things you can't see and unimaginative lighting! If you have mobility problems - don't even think about visiting! The paths are very slippery, badly lit and there is no indication of where the steps are. And to stop you falling down into the caves, there is a single rope stretched between stakes - nothiong to stop you falling under the rope! - and in some places the path is quite high!
The boat trip takes about an hour each way - 30 minutes in the grotto was quite enough for me!

OMG it’s beautiful there!! When I went there on 1/3/23, I saw no tourists. No standing in line or anything like that mentioned in other people’s reviews:) I squatted down by the water, I just could not keep my eyes away from the beautiful deep blue water. I just also loved it when I didn’t have to worry about taking turns with other tourists and such!! Just me and beautiful deep blue water, that was perfect!!
To get there from Alghero, I took an ASRT bus (2.5 euro each way) going to Capo Caccia.
I bought the bus tickets at one of those tobaccobist’s & newsagent’s.
In winter time, the bus leaves Alghero only once a day at 9:15am. It took 50min to get there. The bus stopped at the entrance. Got the admission ticket at the entrance at 10:30am. They opened the gate, then I took many steps down to get to the cave. The view going down was beautiful. I think the tour to go inside of the cave started at 11:00am. I’m not usually a huge fan of cave, but I thought this cave looked so beautiful getting reflection from the water. The cave tour ended at 11:30am. I took many steps up to go back to the entrance. I took the 12:00pm bus to go back to Alghero:) very efficient. I thought the trip was totally worth it :)
Happy new year to everyone!!:)

It is very sad to see that this geological beauty has been completely turned into a huge cash making machine. Great if you want to see what a grotto looks like if it is your first time. Otherwise, the guided visit is ridiculous. Hundreds of people form a line, you cannot hear the guide or if you do she is far far in front of you commenting stuff you do not see yet ( we are hundreds stuck back to back in this grotto).
Conclusion:
1. Waste of time
2. Sad to participate to this cash machine

A visit to this place is a must if you are in the Alghero region. In actual fact the place is called Capo Caccia. There are two ways how to reach the caves. On foot and via boat. We chose the toughest one which is on foot.
Booking is advised since there are limited places available per slot. Booking is however easy on the website. You can then pay at the entrance. You can also try your luck by turning up at the entrance and hope that there are empty spots available but this is not recommended because you are not guaranteed a spot and there is the risk of staying in the sun for quite some time.
One other thing before booking is to check the weather forecast irrispective of whether one is planning to visit the cave on foot or via boat. I suspect that if the sea is rough then the boats might not operate. Nevertheless going on foot in bad weather can be tricky as well.
To reach the caves on foot means descending a flight of about 600 steps that are cut in the rocks. There are some tricky parts but one cannot say that it is dangerous.
Down in the cave you basically wait for the guide which will take you for a 45 minute guided tour inside the cave. Since the pathways are narrow one has to walk in a single file and it can get a bit crowded. There are some places where you have to bend a bit so people with mobility issues should avoid it. There are also some slippery bits and one needs to be careful.
The cave per se is well lighted and consists of a vast number of stalactite formations.
Going up is not easy although there are ample places when one can rest. We went with a 5 year old daughter who needed to be lifted up on the way up but thats part of the adventure.
All in all something worth doing once whilst in the Alghero region.

This was not a stellar experience. Arriving at the grotto by sea was seamless BUT when we arrived, there was a huge lineup to pay for the entrance ticket (in cash only). We then walked single file, one after the other, as we snaked along to see the grotto. We walked in a gigantic loop, single file, throughout the whole 30-45 min visit. If you want to stay away from crowds - this is NOT the place for you.
Overall, the grotto is nice. The well marked walkways take away the natural feel, as do the hoards of people snaking through the property one after the other. I wouldn’t recommend it, and would not go back to this visit nor anyone like it.

It was OK. It was very busy and two people on my tour list their footing. It was approximately 40 minutes in the cave and the journey to and fro was approximately 45 minutes. It wasn't a bad experience either but I would say average.

Went here today by boat with the lovely Ursula.
Well, it’s just a great experience all round. The ferry is very comfortable, a large boat holding maybe two hundred passengers.
Thanks goodness we were able to sit outside on the boat as it was sweltering and very humid.
The caves are spectacular! A giant limestone rock like a small version of Gibraltar and at the sea level is a large entrance to a network of caves. They are full of magnificent formations of stalactites and stalagmites and pools with water that’s crystal clear. There’s a defined pathway all the way through with rope handles and steps. It’s well illuminated and there was a good tour guide explaining everything in Italian and English.
Just be aware that you pay at the port for the boat (€16) and it doesn’t include the entrance to the cave which you pretty much have no choice when you’re there. That’s another €14 for adults (€10 for pensioners).
But it’s worth it!

The tour was ok, but the group was so large, that we were very far back from the guide and really couldn't hear much of what he said. Unless you love caves, I'd give this a miss

This was an excursion well worth the price. The boat was very clean and roomy. Getting off the boat to enter the grotto was easy. The tour guide was quite good. Only problem was that some people were talking as she spoke so often it was hard to hear her. The grotto was stupendous! So amazingly beautiful. A once in a lifetime adventure.
