About
The hypogeum Bellacicco is a hypogeum structure. Its peculiarity which makes this structure unique all over the historic and artistic landscape of Taranto is that in it we can find records of all the ages and the historical periods dating back from Taranto's foundation by the Spartans up to the XVII century, date of the building of the homonymous noble palace. The hypogeum is divided into 4 rooms (5-8 metres hight) and shows an extension of 800 square metres and a depth which reaches, at the lovest levels (4 altogher) 16 metres under the street basement and 4 metres under the sea level. The structure, in central position as regards the isle of the historic centre, represents a crossroad with the other hypogeum structures of the ancient village that constitues, on the whole, the system of "Taranto Underground" that reaches and radiates just from the hypogeum de Beaumont Bonelli Bellacicco. Thought it is difficult to set a precise date of building and the different historic developments of the structure, all the historical, archeological and geological studies report as date of the first building of the hypogeum the period of foundation of Taranto city when the Spartans extracted the first rock banks to build the first constructions and fortifications. Later this area of the historical centre will be called Caves Area. The structure is private property and privately run without public financing. It currently houses the Cultural Association "Filonide" and it is the only hypogeum structure fully restored and accessible in the historical centre. The restoration of the structure (lasted 6 years) was realized by the family funds of its current owners (family Bellacicco) without public or private financing. In 2007 it received the acknoledgement as remarkable cultural heritage by the Minister for cultural heritage and activities by the apposition of a display at the entrance of the structure. The hypogeum is object of different degree thesis in Italy and in the U.S.A and it is a container of cultural and artistic events of different kind

Meeting the ancient Spartans
Sep 2020
This place offers the opportunity to meet the ancient Spartans and to see how they lived and what they loved! Dott. Bellacicco has done a remarkable job in bringing this place to light and making it available for everyone. I am so glad of having been in such a unique place!

Awesome Spartan history right in Taranto!
Sep 2019
We had no idea Taranto had so much ancient Greek history. It was really amazing! We were so appreciative of this museum. We walked in on day that they were closed to the public but had a large tour group there and they gave us a tour anyway! The owners of the museum did a really great job of giving us a tour in Italian with a tiny bit of English. They were SO nice and the man was so knowledgeable. He gave us an amazing tour showing us the actual Spartan street, Greek artifacts, and the stairway that heads down to the sea. We loved spending time there. Grazie mille!
Mi dispiace non parliamo Italiano! Amore, gli spartani :)

A place to visit , but
Apr 2018 • Couples
It is a real fine museum to visitas you learn a lot about the history of Taranto during the ages. BUT if youare not familiar with the Italian language, I can imagine that for these people ther is not much to learn, I would advise the owners (for it is a privata museum) to make an effortand organise not only tours in Italian , but also inEnglish, French or German

So much history in one place.
Apr 2016 • Family
From the arrival of the Spartans who developed Taranto into one of the major cities of the ancient world, then the Romans conquered Taranto, then the Saracens and then the Spanish. The museum is actually in the underground chambers built by expert Spartan stonemasons in about 700BC. This place is well worth a visit.

Make it more interesting!
Apr 2016
Generally this place is very interesting. But they could've made so much more out of it. For instance, add more interesting information and more correct information! After the tour I googled a bit to learn more about ancient Taranto and found out that some info given on the tour was inaccurate.
I felt like this underground part of the city was too small, but later found out that it's all over downtown of Taranto. Just walk around historic city and ask people, they will show you.
The tour costs 4 euro, which is cheap and worth it.

Interesting, but you need to Understand Italian

This small private museum is only open on Sundays, get there 10:30 ish and get a tour. It occupies various levels of the basement of one of the old buildings in an area that has been occupied for a long period. Whilst the artefacts are few the walls speak loudly of their history since 700BC. Glad we persevered and finally found it open.
NOTE: it is not advisable to visit if wearing high heels as most floors are formed of a metal grill.

A magic place in a magic and forgotten town...
Aug 2015 • Family
I visited the "Museum" the other night and I was really pleased by the tour. But don't expect a "proper" museum! Indeed the guide explains that it is a "Museum" in the Greek sense of the words: a place for the Muses, an inspirational location for poets. It is an ipogeum (an ancient underground location built by the Greeks some 2000 years B.C.) where you can see and witness the walls, built in different historical moments as well as the almost labyrinthical structure that will take you very deep underground in a small temple, then transformed into a thermal site by the Romans. The guide explained all the history about the site and you could not expect at all such a magic place under the streets of an old town and literally on the sea! I strongly suggest visiting the place (the entrance fee is very cheap too!) to experience something totally unexpected and mesmerizing.
Thanks to the owner Marcello for the kindness and passion.
