Beautiful church, but so touristy that it gets irritating (people photographing with flash, groups talking loudly, people wearing hats and getting reprimanded). Also, consider the fact that the bones of St. Nicholas were stolen from Turkey 1,000 years ago. So much for respect. Don't forget...More

This church is more famous than the cathedral due to the tomb of St. Nicholas. The age of the building is not obscured by embellishments of the 17th century like many. It is massive and simple, impressive and straight-forward.

This is Santa Claus's forever home! :) St. Nicolas is burried under the church altar. The upper side is catholic church and in the basement orthodox.

Nice Architecture and Nice story about how and why it was built. No comments about the story about St. Nicolas bones yet it is a nice one

Spent so much time looking up in the Basilica, the ceiling is fantastic. Make sure you visit the crypt also.

This is truly a mystic place, in a very wide square in the heart of Città Vecchia. Inside is amazing and the crypt is breathless. There, both Catholic and Orthodox services are performed, so you can find people praying in many languages.

The basilica was built between 1087 and 1197 and today is an important pilgrimage destination both Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians from Eastern Europe.

4 hours is very limited. You could do Alberobello with a car and driver : 1hr to get there, 1hr to walk around, 1hr to get back. Hot work, not sure if it’s worth it, depends what you like. Otherwise 4hrs is great to walk... More
