Chiesa di Santa Corona is a beautiful Dominican church located in the heart of Vicenza. It’s brick facade is unassuming and its gothic interior exudes understated elegance. Look for the many hidden treasures inside including Bellini’s “The Baptism of Christ” and the stunning Valmarania Chapel designed by Andrea Palladio.

This church is a treasure box full of delights. Bellini's masterpiece is a must but the Lady Chapel is a tour de force too. The high alter is a master piece of pietra dura. Palladios Chapel in the lower level is something of a dissapointment in comparison!

The church does not look very interesting from the outside being made mainly of brick but inside there are treasures to be discovered! The building is situated just off the main Corso Palladio and just up from the Teatro Olimpico and the Palazzo Chiericati. The admission charge is included in the Vicenza Museum Card. The Gothic nave is quite plain but light and airy; the Bellini painting should not be missed and there are several other paintings by Montagna, Veronese and Pittoni dotted about. The Palladio designed Valmarana Chapel is in the basement and there are several other chapels and a half ruined cloister around the church. (The main cloister has a seperate entrance and houses the Archeological Museum which I did not visit on this occasion) There is also a small chapel with a Monstrance containing a supposed thorn from the Crown of Thorns. The high altar is a marvellous example of inlaid marbles of many different hues and colours and depicts scenes from the bible - the workmanship is outstanding! The church is very peaceful and uncrowded but could do with some more information boards and direction signs so that you don't miss anything.

This church is very close to some of the highest rated attractions in Vicenza and is definitely worth a stop, since you'll probably walk right past it anyway. Beautiful inside. We did not appreciate the Valmarana Chapel in the basement designed by Palladio. We found this basement, as well as many others in Italy, damp and mildewy and quickly left for the fresh air upstairs.

The last church we've visited during our holiday. It's beautiful but I wasn't in awe like in Vicenza's cathedral (maybe we've seen too much in too little time). It's included with the museum pass and the Bellini alone is worth the visit.
