Despite its name, Basilica Palladiana is not a church. It is located on Piazza dei Signori in the heart of Vicenza. A vast structure filling the piazza. The upper hall with the wooden roof of an upturned boats hull is amazing. The view from the external galleries is pleasent over the market place. Sadly in winter the upper roof area is closed for H&S reasons! Take the lift up!

The Basilica Palladiana (or to give it its correct title Palazzo della Ragione) dominates one side of the Piazza del Signori and what a building it is! Palladio's first public commission actually supports and stabilises the 15th century brick meeting hall of the city council. The galleries around the first floor give wonderful views of the Piazza and inside is the vast Gothic Hall, restored after war-time bombing. The top gallery goes around the roof and gives excellent views over the city. There is also a small bar up there so you can enjoy a drink whilst admiring the views! The Basilica harks back to the ancient Roman basilica where the business of the city was carried on, justice was dispensed and the inhabitants could meet and discuss the latest news. On the ground floor are numerous jewellery shops and a small jewellery museum. The entrance to the Basilica is next to the Torre de Piazza; the admission charge is not covered by the Vicenza Museum Card but it is only a few Euros.
