Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

We got into multiple shops with masks but La Bauta and the lady that was working there and helping us, won as straight away. We left for a walk into the city and then directly came back to buy our Venice masks.
There is a great variety of unique made masks, with great colours and breathtaking designs. The lady was very helpful and was helping us to choose or to know how we can get our masks back to our country.
All I have to say is that I would definitely not consider looking any other shop after our visit there and for sure we will be in contact with their online ways of selling masks for future use.

La Bauta was a wonderful shop. It was the first mask shop we went into on our Venice trip, while we loved the selection, we weren't sure since it was our first stop. After walking through endless mask shops in Venice, it's safe to say La Bauta is the best.
We returned at the end of the day and bought 2 masks and a cloak. The woman that helped us was very nice and showed us lots of options. Great service, great pricing, and most importantly original pieces that stand out from the ordinary. La Bauta is a most stop for your costume needs.

This is the best shop in Venice for masks, costumes and authentic clothing. It’s like walking into a working costume fabricator for a Hollywood production.
My habit for purchases, restaurants and hotels is to research and make in person visits to compare. Before visiting Venice this included various online looks at retailers for masks and costumes for Carnival. After arriving we spent two days walking the streets around San Marco to make stops to check quality, pricing and details. The result is that La Bauta is, by far, the best provider for this specialty in Venice.
1- All of their pieces are handmade, by the family staff and artists. These are authentic Venetian masks and costumes, not mass products from a factory…yes that shows, yes you can tell even if someone passes in the street.
2- The selection is huge. They range from the simple eye masks to elaborate full face displays and even full head fantasy pieces in the shape of animals or concept pieces. These are truly creative pieces of art.
3- The pricing is not only reasonable, but a good bit less than other stores.
4- There are three storefronts within the same square. One is dedicated to masks, another is dedicated to costumes and clothing and the third is a combination that includes the workshop for their art.
5- They do custom work on the spot to make your mask truly “yours” by adding plumes, decoration and more. All you need do is ask.
6- The range of styles and materials was unmatched. I’d have chosen the shop for the reasons above alone, however I find it important to note that while other shops seemed to focus on one particular style such as traditional paintwork or crystals…La Bauta had a huge range of everything from feather dressed to the aforementioned paint/crystals to velvet, silk and other adornments.
Go here. It’s that simple.

Amazing experience. Friendly personnel, with smiles, ready to help, don’t pushes you to buy, gives all the time you need to decide. Visited a lot of shops looking for the mask, but this one was the best! Pricing very good, big choice, good quality. I do recommend this shop!

Me and my husband rented two renaissance costumes for one day and the experience was amazing. We visit a lot of shops but at La Bauta we found the quality with the best prices. The owners were absolutely friendly and they help us to find the best costumes for us. The masks are also amazing and we bought some to bring home. They supplied also some movies with their masks like Red Notice and House of Gucci . Believe me their masks are stunning

We purchased three masks online.
We contacted La Bauta and arranged a time to have a video call to see the masks in store.
Rossella walked us around the store via FaceTime showing us the beautiful masks in their shop. Rossella then arranged the pieces and took photos so we could see them put together.
The masks were delivered to our home in the United States in only four days!
The masks are absolutely stunning and come with certification of authenticity.
I highly recommend La Bauta and a very big grazie mille to all the staff!

10 out of 10 would recommend. I was in Venice back in August and stumbled across La Bauta when I was quite lost. Before the pandemic started I had begun putting together a cosplay costume that was a Victorian bodice dress. And it was just missing something. I showed a picture of the dress to the shopkeeper and within minutes she had a selection of beautiful masks to try then went beyond and suggested adding a cloak. I came away with an absolutely gorgeous mask and a velvet cape. When I returned from Europe I put the entire costume together and it was magnificent

Loved this place! They make all mask by hand using the paper mache method which is the traditional way. They also use the same fabric on their mask as they do their gowns. The crystals used are Swarovski. The feathers are also real feathers to prevent breakage and damage. The mask do come with a certified stamp. I bought one for myself and my two daughters. They are absolutely beautiful! It’s also just a fun shop to go in as masquerades are part of the Venetian culture. I plan to get a clear box to store mine in and use a decorative piece in my living room; it’s too beautiful to not be seen.

We’ve taken part in a workshop to decorate our own mask and it was super fun. The artist explained everything and was very helpful when it came to arranging different colors.
On top of that she was fluent in English and French.
Best idea to spend the hottest hours of the day by decorating your own masks 🎭.
Thank you for the great time,
We had a blast!
