Wonderful to find genuine and delicious pastries/cakes plus cracking coffee in a quiet and pretty setting away from the hoards, at reasonable prices. Clearly popular with locals wanting a pick-me-up and a chat with chums. Much needed sugar/caffeine boost on a wet cold day last week!!

A dependable spot for a coffee & a brioche. This one is open on Sunday. It's more expensive but so good to sit in the campo and soak up the atmosphere.

A very friendly place with a great selection of local sweets. It is quiet and nice. We went there a lot of times for a refreshing spritz! Prices are very good, 2 spritz and crisps for 8€

We were in the piazza Santi Giovanni e Paolo several times recently and the landlords of the apt we were staying at took us for a drink to this establishment just south of the church (see also Venice Day by Day p. 80) -- our landlord mentioned that the owner of Santa Rosa was his old schoolmate.. everyone was sitting... This café was recommended by a local. We had a cappuccino (not after mid morning of course), a double espresso and several tasty morsels. The staff were friendly and (if you need it) speak good English. I can happily recommend though it is a standing café from what I could see.

Stumbled upon this like everyone else and pleasantly surprised. They had the best puff pastries and tartes we had in Venezia and the cafelatte did not dissapoint either. Not far from San Marco Piazza

Located in a very nice place close to Sts Giovanni and Paolo Basilica and far from overcrowded place, this Gelateria offers a wide range of delicious ice cream and prices are correct. The service needs to be improved especially don't let customers wait too long before ordering. For this main reason I rate this Gelateria as average.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
