We have passed Alberto's shop many times, but on the last visit we took 4 pictures for him to frame. His expertise, care and wonderful personality make this a must see stop. His shop is an Aladdin's cave of wonders, we loved it. As others have said, he truly does have such a big heart, a lovely guy and a... More

Alberto went above and beyond for us and helped us preserve a rare piece of fortuny fabric that had been a gift. He made a gold frame with a green banding to complement the fabric, protected it and framed it. Thank you. Our shopping didn't stop there, we purchased 4 golden angels, a golden winged lion, and an unbelievable golden... More

I bought two custom made mirrors here and they are fantastic. Alberto is a real craftsman with a warm heart and a willingness to help you get just what you need. This is a wonderful place to shop for gifts as well as home furnishings. Don't miss it!

Cavalier is a true artist, not only an incredible craftsman. He is a master in the art of golden decoration, and also an esthete who carefully considers the object itself, and makes the best out it. Whether you are bringing a painting to be framed, or have a piece of art created, he won't fail in delivering the best piece... More

While visiting Venice this past summer with my brother Clair, we ventured into a shop of incredible wood carvings. We had walked by hundreds of shops without stopping but this shop drew us in and to this day, I can't tell you why. We were both fascinated with the incredible carving skills of Gianni and Alberto. I selected two pieces... More

What a marvellous experience. The owner/artist makes everything and is a genuinely nice man. He explained the process for creating the work on display and we bought a beautiful silver-leaf frame in the end. A unique piece, reasonably priced and friendly, personal service. Highly recommended.

Statues & statuettes, frames for mirrors and paintings, lamps, cherubim and various other works of all sizes fill this small workshop. Far from being a tourist trap (though we do find it hard to leave without something!), as their business card proudly states "all work done in this laboratory is done by hand", and according to traditional techniques. It is... More

On your walk from S. Marco to the Accademia or P. Guggenheim, at the top of the Campo S. Stefano, make certain to stop in at Cavalier. Father and son Gianni and Alberto are master craftsman carving beautiful works including putti, frames and religious figurines. Should you want a customized piece they are happy to oblige and ship. My husband... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
