Me, my husband and our three kids (ages 14, 11 and 8) had a fantastic time making the masks and got much more into it then we thought we would! The instruction was great and the masks are beautiful. A brilliant expirience, a group of 8 of us went, we pre booked from the UK. We had a potted history of the masks, shown decoration technicis and we decorated 2 masks over a 2 hour period. We made some lovely decorations, very personal to your visit to Venice. Sarah was brilliant with us. Thank you. Top tip. Book a... More

A magical place displaying an abundance of masks depicting a variety of personas and creatures, all created and painted with splendid workmanship. Friendly helpful salespeople. They have 3 locations, two shops selling masks and one workshop where you can paint your own mask. You might have to explore a bit to find the shops but persevere because the reward is... More

Last week, we enjoyed a wonderful 2+ hr class with Mirta. She was terrific! We learned about the interesting history of the mask in Venetian life, the various types of masks, and design styles for making them. Then, we each made 2 masks, with Mirta's skillful and patient guidance. We were a group of four, two quite senior adults, one... More

If you have the time this was a great experience for the family. Everyone had fun. My youngest who is 12 really enjoyed it. They help you with technique and colors, and it's in a cool area. Do it!!

Having bought several dozen masks from Ca' Macana over the years and having tried painting my own masks at home, I was eager to get some instruction from the masters. I have a background in painting, and so I wanted to find out more about the materials and techniques. My friend and I had a great time and learned a... More

Ca'Macana is a beautiful mask atelier that also runs fantastic mask-making workshops. We reserved a 2 hour private class in advance for 2 kids and 2 adults and - although quite expensive - would do it again in a heart beat. Our instructor, Sarah, was very friendly, warm, knowledgeable, fun and (very) patient with the kids. The boys unanimously voted... More

In a nondescript alley at the Line 1 water bus stop at Ca' Rezziano, this little store and associated workshop provide a memorable experience for kids and adults alike. Choose your mask and paint away under the helpful guidance of the instructor. It's a tad expensive at approx. EUR 50 per person in a public course (~EUR 100 for private),... More

This was a great spot for our family of five with three children ages 10 and 5 yr old twins. The experience of making our own carnival masks was really unique and exciting! The memories made will last a lifetime! The cost for two masks was 44/mask, where you are able to decorate it yourself. The shop workers are very... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
