So unique and beautiful

Not only on an island but a beautiful cathederial as well. A few minutes off of St. Marks, not visited as much as other churches due to its location. Not to be missed.

Visited on a dull grey day, so the interior was also dull. But is a fascinating piece of architecture and, obviously, is a fundamental part of the built environment of Venice. Well worth a look.

TBH this place was closed when we visited but even without going inside it was worth the trek. It is a lovely quiet area to look back at the grand canal and across to San Marco etc. The Basilica is very impressive from the outside and nearby places also look interesting.

This cathedral like all cathedrals in Italy is breath taking just for its sheer complexity as a structure and piece of art. With its distinctive dome visible from miles away it is equally as impressive on the inside with rows of fantastic Christian paintings and an alter that looks like it's made entirely of gold and stone

This enormous church on the western point of Dorsoduro is a baroque jewel. While mostly monochromatic the creativity is on loud display through the grand scale of the architectural details. And what a view!

There are a couple of totally iconic places you must visit in Venice, the Basilica of Sanata Maria della Salute is one of the most famous photographed places in the city. We are lucky always staying at the Centurion Hotel just a few minutes walk from the amazing church, which is situated at the very narrow part of Dorsoduro, where... More

An iconic and stunning landmark on the eastern tip of Dorsoduro and the Grand Canal. It is an imposing historic church built in the 1600’s and it is situated in a favourite area of mine and one that affords tremendous views of the surrounding lagoon. If you choose not to walk here from the more central parts of Venice then... More

San Marco may be Venice's most famous church by name, but this church may be Venice's most famous by image and silhouette! Immortalized by Canaletto's famous Grand Canal drawings and followed by later landscape artists, SM Salute was always the main character in the typical Grand Canal scene thanks to her canalside location and prominent dome. Built as a thanksgiving... More

This is one of those WOW cathedrals. Some are lovely, some are pleasing, others may be beautiful, breathtaking or simply interesting. This one is amazing and that is only considering the view from the outside. I didn't get a chance to see this at night but I'm certain that it would be extremely striking as it is quite close to... Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
