Really fabulous cathedral. Be sure to reserve ahead to avoid lines. Really worth it. Pay extra to see gold "pala d'oro"

The Basilica is quite somber and unless you go at certain hours it is dull and dark although magnificent. Ladies need their shoulders covered as in most Catholic Churches.

The Basilica di San Marco was my favorite part of our trip to Venice. I have traveled to Europe many times, and the Byzantine architecture seems out of place at first. However, one look inside the cathedral reveals the beautiful gold mosaics and breathtaking splendor that inspired the builders. The centerpiece is the body of Saint Mark at the main... More

This is my favorite European church. Go during the hour when the thousands of led lights light up the incredible mosaics. No pictures allowed but the beauty will stay with you. Not to be missed.

Lovely Basilica to visit Extremely busy so beware that there seems to be queues at all times to go in, it is free but attractions inside -charged at around €3/4/5 Architecture is beautiful and the history behind it makes it worth a visit (even if only for a few minutes) They are strict with taking pictures inside and going in... We prebooked a tour which is well worth it to avoid the queue. The guide talked very quickly and was not easy to follow. An amazing place visually and very interesting. I should love to have taken photos , which is prohibited and was very frustrated to see so many people taking them anyway and the staff not seeming to... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
