About
On October 1, 2016, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi reopened its doors to the public, effectively returning to its former function as a place dedicated to international trade but at the same time not losing sight of the Venetian community that hosts it. The major restorations by Rem Koolhaas have in fact redefined the building, allowing everyone to linger in the center of the court, to admire Venice from a privileged position or to discover the ancient traces of merchants on the different floors. This is combined with the interior design by Jamie Fobert, who reinterprets Venetian colors, shapes and materials by combining the ancient and the modern. Today, Fondaco dei Tedeschi proposes itself as a meeting and exchange point between cultures and people from all over the world. Located in the center of the city, the Fondaco not only maintains close relationships with the most important cultural institutions in the city, but above all offers a real holistic experience that starts from the bout

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Amazing views! It was a spectacular way to see the city from above! So nice that it is free, we loved it! Make sure you book ahead. They were turning walk ins away!

When I Googled ‘roof top bars in Venice’ this popped up. When I saw there wasn’t a bar but the most magnificent view of the Rialto bridge and grand canal, I thought I have to do this. So glad we made reservations..they would not take anyone without a reservation and we came early thinking they could get us in. Not the case- it is such a wonder view I can see why they don’t have a bar. No one would ever leave!

It is worthwhile to make advance online reservations for their 15 minute rooftop terrace views. I believe the availability opens up about a month before your scheduled date of visit, so check often. They mention that you may make reservations in person, but it was not the case we visited in July. They only allow a certain amount of people up on the terrace at any given time.
To enter the place, you need to get to the front entrance (near the right of Rialto Bridge)and detour over to the end of the street for the actual entrance used. From their, you can use the elevator to access over to the terrace. The views from here are nice of the Grand Canal past Rialto Bridge and before Rialto Bridge, along with the rooftops of the San Marco Basilica and Campanile in the background on a clear day.
No where else in Venice can you get such nice rooftop views of these famous landmarks. Well worth the visit here.

Beautiful, sweeping views down the Grand Canal and over roofs of Venice. It is free (!!) to book, and I'd recommend making a booking in advance as they limit the number of guests. The roofdeck is above a beautiful high-end retail center that includes a cafe on the ground floor.

Upmarket department store in a lavishly converted palazzo next to the Rialto. Sensational gallery on top floor and an even better terrace for photographs with probably the best views in Venice. Go!! Go!!!
Cocktails on the ground floor to recover from the view. Amazing space and stunning stunning views.

The entry to this terrace at the top of a department story is free, but in peak season you will have to pre-reserve for a specific time slot. You are only given 15 minutes to stay, which will annoy those like me who like to linger, but still provides an excellent vantage point over the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal.

If you are after fantastic views of the Grand Canal, then head here. Sitting high above the Rialto Bridge the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi rooftop provides fantastic views in a much more laid back atmosphere than down below.
The great thing is that it is free. You do need to pre-book, you get 15 minutes viewing time which is plenty and they only allow limited numbers at any one time so there are no crowds to contend with.

This beautiful department store was an oasis of calm from the busy streets of Venice. We had a relaxed and cool breakfast in the downstairs cafe and strolled around the exquisite designer concessions, where I got seduced to buying Dior sunglasses :)
