About
Founded in 1545, the University of Padua Botanical Garden is the oldest in the world to have maintained its original location and architectural layout. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Green heart of Padua city centre, it is host to more than 6,000 specimens and 3,500 species on a total area of 3.5 hectares. In the old Garden, characterised by a charming circular structure enclosed within walls, there are medicinal, insectivores, poisonous, succulents, aquatic, and ornamental plants, as well as historical plants such as “Goethe’s Palm” (1585). In 2014 the Garden was expanded with the construction of the Biodiversity Garden, consisting of five low-impact large greenhouses where visitors can enjoy a fascinating journey through the planet’s natural biomes – from tropical to sub-humid areas, from temperate zones to deserts – while exploring the thousand-year relationship between plants and humankind.

Slightly disappointing but still worth a visit

I was expecting great things, billed as the oldest Botanical Garden in Europe. It’s interesting, but I realised that it is more a historical piece rather than ‘spectacular’ as other gardens are. So it’s the time periods, world discoveries and exploration and the research to focus on here. Good but not ‘Wow’ for me.

Fantastic and beautiful garden - a must-see
Aug 2020
Must see. A really great experience. Very well-presented with plenty of explanation in English. A huge range of plants which really demonstrates how much the Padovan botanists knew and how far they developed our understanding of the role of plants in our lives.

A beautiful respite in the center if the town near St Anthony and Prato.
The medicinal plants are amazing as are the water repellant plants. A great day visit for all ages.

Old but still very hip

This is the world’s first Botanical Garden amongst the churches and piazzas of Padua I suspect it is often overlooked but it should be on your itinerary. The first potatoes in Europe were cultivated here and the modern greenhouses with the tropical specimens rival the much more storied gardens in Singapore. A must see and a great antidote to the Venice Bienniale which was bleak and colorless not so these gardens!

It was a warm day on 31st August on our visit - lovely shades provided by various trees. Pleny of seats to relax - medicinal garden and hothouses were some of the highlights.

Make sure you go into the hothouses!
Sep 2019
The gardens outside were rather dry and tired, which was understandable as it was late September.

But we went into the hothouses and that was a real treat.

I loved the stories behind how plants are used in so many everyday things, and left with a sense of being happy that I garden and grow my own vegetables.

It costs 10 euro to get in, which is a contribution towards the running of the gardens.

Surprising botanic garden
Sep 2019 • Business
I visited here not expecting too much, but was very impressed. Having visited many botanic gardens throughout the world, this one rates quite high (not like Kew or Kirstenbosch) but still very good. It is very old - the oldest university botanic garden in the world. They have a new area of greenhouses with different biomes - this is the gem of the garden.

I love gardens, but this is dire!
Aug 2019 • Couples
Visited Aug 2019. Great reception centre, air conditioned in a heatwave but with a door open. So much for the environment. The interpretation app is only in Italian. If you want to see a good botanical garden - Visit Kew Gardens in England. 10 € for a visit. Waste of money and time.
