Huge square
Oct 2021
It is difficult to rate this really because it is unique and unlike anything else. The elliptical square is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. In the middle, there is a park area, l'isola Memmia, surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues. There are 78 statues, 40 in the outer ring and 38 in the inner. The statues depict important people who have been connected to Padua in some way such as the artist Andrea Mantegna, the poet Francesco Petrarca, Scientist Gallileo Galilei, the sculptor Antonio Canova, various popes and many others. Four beautiful bridges lead across the canal. Around the square are several palaces and residential buildings that were built between the 14th and the 18th centuries. At the southern end of the square is the huge church Basilica di Santa Giustina. It's a very nice place indeed, but in my opinion, it lacks a bit of identity. It can not really decide what it wants to be. A square? A park? A monument? The size also makes it look a bit deserted.

A must to visit. but avoid it on a Saturday when it is filled with market stands selling (cheap) clothing and other stuff which attracts huge crowds.

Nice spot to walk, to sit in the grass and relax at the water in the middle of the big city with beautiful statues.

Big open space
Jan 2021 • Family
This place is in good reach by public transportation. Huge open.space in the middle of old town. That is it. We thought it looked ugly.

Very large area easy to get to by tram
Sep 2020
Large and interesting area, that had a few fruit and veg and clothing stalls at the town end. A few people around but was not busy to plenty of space to wander around, interesting buildings . One or two cafes to watch the world go by. Basilica about half a mile away and a large glass fronted supermarket and large car parking area.

Padua should be recommended more
Oct 2019
If you want to experience an authentic Italian city that hasn’t been taken over by Tourism, go to Padua. 37 minute travel time to Venice. Trains between. Spend a day here. Great way to spend an afternoon sitting in the sun in the park. Relaxing and beautiful. Keep away from the Italian smokers

My park.
Sep 2019
The first time I visited this park I was 15 years old and vowed to return every time I went to Italy. Now I am almost 60 I kept my word and it remains one of my favourite places in the world.
You can have a picnic, you can play music, you can play soccer, you can read, or just walk around and enjoy the statues.

Astonishing!
Jan 2020 • Couples
This Piazza is huge. Not knowing what to expect and walking out from a narrow alleyway into this huge space in the middle of the city was astonishing.

A vast piazza!
Sep 2019
This piazza was laid out on the footprint of the Roman arena and the piazza took on its present appearance in the 18th century. It is pleasant to walk around the island although it can get very hot if the weather is sunny. It is more or less impossible to photograph the piazza properly as you really need to be looking down on it to appreciate the layout!
I had lunch at the Passando per Modena (See my seperate review of this eatery) which is situated where the Via Umberto I enters the piazza at the top left of the aerial view - very nice to sit under the arches and watch the world go by!

Interesting
Sep 2019
Enjoyed an after lunch walk around this lovely spot, this is a relaxing place, nice trees and places to sit, we were by no means alone as it seems to be a meeting place for the university students who were enjoying the sunshine as we were. There are some beautiful buildings surrounding the park, well worth a visit.
