Impressive room by its size, beautiful frescos and of course the gigantic horse statue. Very enjoyable to visit and take pictures since there was almost no tourists due to the Covid.

Gorgeous medieval civil architecture
Sep 2019
Upon arriving at Piazza delle Erbe walking along the Via Municipio, leaving behind the Università degli Studi di Padova and the Palazzo Moroni (Padova town Hall) one is startled at the sight of such a magnificent building as the Palazzo della Ragine whose beauty and size are really impressive. The contemplation from the stated square particularly of the covered gallery arcade on the first storey and the nice balustrade on which it rests is an unforgettable experience. That arcade supports the upper architectural structure. From the gallery it's possible to watch a part of the Town Hall itself and other nice buildings as well as of course the Piazza delle Erbe itself. The latter is a lively point in the city especially when there is an open air market. Pacing up and down the said gallery is a rather pleasant exrecice as well as a relaxing and appeasing one especially in hot weather. The interior is stunning due to its size and beauty. The fresco mural paintings all over the walls are very interesting and attractive. It's a fantastic work somehow described hereunder which should be beheld in a pleasant condition and a spiritual way thus examining it attentively.
Il Palazzo della Ragione was the nucleus of the city life. It was built in 1218 during the time of the three communes, under the podestà Giovanni Rusconi. It stands where there was the centre of the market piazzas in the same place where once laid the Roman forum. The Palazzo was the administrative centre and the seat of the law courts. It was the landmark of the city particularly on account of its height. Two storeys were part of the original building dating back to 1200. The premises on each floor were respectively dedicated to the following: shops on the groundfloor, bureaus and accounting offices on the 1st floor, courts and public administration offices on the top floor. At the beginning of the fourteenth century Fra Giovanni degli Eremitani had the Palazzo enlarged through the carrying out of the ship-keel vaulted roof and two inner loggias. The building included mural paintings by Giotto based upon works by the Paduan philosopher Pietro d'Abano, but unfortunately all that was destroyed by a fire having taken place in 1420. New frescoes were painted by Nicolò Miretto and Stefano da Ferrara in the thirties of the fifteenth century. These are, as pointed out above, all over the walls of the grand Salone organised in three strips: above, the painted animals indicate the location of the different courts. The 333 rectangles depict the twelve month - each one of them with a patron saint -, the horoscopes, the constellations, the activities typically performed in each season, and the relevant features of the ones born under every zodiac sign. In their acts men had to abide by the cosmological systems and justice.
The day I visited the Palazzo, as stated above, it housed an exhibition dedicated to the architect Aldo Rossi who had studied architecture in the fifties of the 20th century at the Politecnico di Milano.
The Palazzo della Ragione is well worth a visit while in Padova. It's an architectural jewel which one could regret to miss.

Amazing indoor market
Nov 2019
We were in Padova for only a few days, staying in a hotel. Had we been staying longer and self catering, we would have spent loads. A beautiful building housing a great indoor market. My mouth is watering thinking about all the food goodies it contains!

Amazing Great Hall
Oct 2019 • Solo
The ground floor of this civic building covers multiple food shops, while market stalls are set up in thd adjacent piazzas on weekdays.
The upper level is a huge great hall, the interior walls of which are covered by frescoes depicting the influence of the zodiac on human life and activities, as well as mtipld coats of arms. At the western end of the hall is a huge wooden horse made in 1466 for the Capodilista family and given to the city 400 years later. A working Foucault’s pendulum is in the south east corner of the great hall.
The loggia on the south side of the great hall overlooks Piazza delle Erbe.

Best of Padua
Oct 2019
Loved this building and the entire Piazza. Sunday, full of life. We sat and had a Spritz and I admired this Building. Wanted so much to go inside but something was scheduled there and the line was blocks long...next time.
This area was what I expected. You are in the center of the world in the 1500's.
If you do nothing else in Padua come here. Piazza's on both sides of the Building and all surrounding Buildings are wonderful as well.

Average, over-hyped, town hall upstairs
Oct 2019
The upper floor is the old town hall, and that's exactly what it looks like.....a large empty room with frescoes on the walls. They do hold some events here, and it would be a terrific place to see an event, but on it's own it's a rather uninspiring room. The wooden horse statue is quite arresting; it's a replica of the Donatello statue in front of the Basilica a mile away.

The ground floor is full of food vendors (mostly meat/cheese/deli) and there are open squares on either side to sit with a drink or shop from the vendors there, but the building itself was a letdown. I'm glad it was free with the Padova Card and I didn't have to spend any money to see it.

Middle age City Hall
Aug 2019
The building is a curiosity itself. The first floor roof is extraordinary. In the huge room there are more than 100 frescos on the walls. There is a huge wooden horse statue, which looks like the Donatello horse at the cathedral. On the ground floor there are small shop, like a market.
