Fantastic

As a fan of both architecture and birding, it was a bit of a no-brainer to pay a visit to the Cimitero Monumentale di Torino when I was in the area. Architecturally the place is stunning. When the top cemetaries in europe are rated, usually the main consideration is which famous dead people are in there. So Pere Lachaise and Tikhvin are popular, but if you prefer stone to bone, then it is hard to beat this place. As for birds, I saw two Hawfinches here (a rare bird in Italy though there has been an irruption of them in western Europe this year), loads of Black Redstart, Treecreepers, a Sparrowhawk, etc etc.

This was one of the most beautiful things we saw in Turin. Impressive and beautiful. You can compare it with an artmuseum.

A place to reflect and ponder on the past
Sep 2015
Most of us do not go to cemeteries for fun, but if you travel through Torino and you want a taste of its past, it might be a good stop for a quiet moment of reflection. You may come out with some great photos, too. I personally go to visit my family tomb. You walk along beautiful open air tree lined alleys and see remarkable statues and tombs that reflect the artistic talent of the past generations and the enduring love for those who passed away. Birds sing and visitors bring flowers to leave there.

A wonderful free attraction in Turin

This was one of the best cemeteries I have visited in Europe. It is free, easy to get to from the centre of Turin with a bus from via Po. It has some of the best examples of funerary art and sculptures with varying styles, that we have ever seen. Crypts and Mausoleums can be visited underground.
A must for those interested in this style of architecture and art.
The cemetery also has plaques of famous people buried in the cemetery, and a booklet in English or other languages is provided in the office.
You may need a free permit to take photographs.
