Unique museum with great exhibits
Jun 2020
MAO is usually neglected by the tourists although it is in the historical center and is too overshadowed by the other well known points of interest of Turin, such as Museo Egizio, Mole Antonelliana and Musei Reali, without a valid reason, in my opinion. It is not as big as those mentioned above but it is unique by itself with great exhibits that cannot be seen often from Japan, China, India and many other countries/regions from the Orient.
Lots of items are on display, varying from ancient manuscripts, folk costumes, fabrics, statues of various gods, weapons, pottery, etc. Awesome were the Samurai armor and the Ninja weapons. Tons of information in Italian and English, perfectly arranged exhibitions in different halls as per the area the artefacts came from with 5 main areas - Japan, China, the Himalayan region, South and South-East Asia and the Arabic world.
This cute museum is housed in a historical building - Palazzo Mazzonis - which was the Turin residence of 2 branches of one of the most important Piedmontese families - the Solaros.
I can say we spent a wonderful couple of hours in MAO!

Four floors of a peculiar exposition of many pieces of art manufature from India, China, Japan, Himalaya and Islam area.
A quick tour in oriental arts.
Take tour time to read info and description about shown pieces and historic explanations.
I suggest to get a guide or at least an electronic one.

I knew there were Samurai armour here which is why I visited.

The museum is divided into 3 floors

I was expecting to see some of the lovely Chinese brush paintings, maybe some kimonos etc

But there was just lots of pots.

It was extremely hot in the museum too.

€10 was a lot of money for what was on display.

Finest masterpieces from Gandara, India, China and Myanmar
Jul 2018 • Couples
The museum is beautifully arranged in the old medieval town. The explanations are very well done: a lot to learn. The objects are well located in their environment and history.
The mix of Hellenistic and Indian cultures in the Gandara section is one of the most astonishing museum sections in the world

An excellent overview of oriental art
Aug 2018 • Solo
This was a very interesting museum and has a nice sample of artefacts across the region. Not big, but good quality. The special exhibition was interesting.
Good English translations for English speakers.
Nice toilets too!

I spent about 2.5 hours to see it all

Worth going to, especially if you haven’t seen much oriental before.

Ninja and Samurai Exhibition plus Japan and Himalayan regions : a fantastic museum.
Feb 2018 • Couples
Attracted by the Ninja and Samurai Exhibition, we went visiting the MAO this afternoon.
The spacial exhibition about samurai is fantastic, there was a person dressed as a samurai and another one as ninja really fantastic, plus the swords and armors.
The information panels quite clear and properly explaining the different aspects and characteristics of the artifacts exposed.
We then continued the visit with the permanent exhibitions about Japan and Himalayan regions : very nice and fatntasic as well
