Beautiful but busy
Aug 2020
This town and its lakeside setting is charm personified. The island nestling in the centre of the lake was just picture perfect.
We did struggle to find parking when we first arrived around 1pm.
But once we were sorted, (we used the multi storey on the edge of he town) , we loved the small town, despite the huge numbers of tourists (are they all there for the dozens of art shops?). There are lots of old buildings and quaint alleys.
A drink in the small square by the boats was a must.
We then had a good walk south of the town along the side of the lake which was quiet and just gorgeous - a great way of escaping the crowds.

A lovely lake to visit
Sep 2019 • Couples
With Lake Como taking up much of people’s attention in the area, this smaller lake is charming to the max. I recommend going into Lago D’Orta town and having a wander through the cobblestone streets before having a gelato and watching the boats go by. Truly serene and much less busy than the other lakes in the area.

Cute lake.

Went here on a group tour so only stayed an hour and half but that was long enough for us to wander the narrow streets and then find the path that leads around the lake. A quiet spot but also a few gift shops. You can get a 'train' down the hill to save you the walk from the car park.

Hidden Gem
Sep 2019
Spent time at a few of the Italian Lakes in our recent trip and Lake Orta was the hidden gem. Free of crowds, nice relaxed pace and just gorgeous - just stunning.

One very minor concern is that it attracts a very "mature" crowd (well it was the case when we visited in early Sept). Its a wee bit dull with not much vibrancy, but very good place to chill and relax

Smaller makes it more charming
Sep 2019 • Couples
The lake is much smaller than Lago Maggiore, as a result it is easier to see across when the sky becomes hazy. It is not developed all the way around as the larger lakes are. No continuous ferry traffic, as well, which creates a more serene experience.
It is only a 40 minute drive/taxi ride from Stresa.

Small lake but charming
Sep 2019
Vacation home dotted along the lake front, water activities abound such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming. Public boats transverse across the lake for visitors and locals. The island of San Gulius is the main attraction on the lake.
