A timeless pleasure
Oct 2021
A timeless pleasure, a precious time, every time.
A picturesque footpath, a beautiful church with great wall frescoes, a magical atmosphere.

heaven of peace
Oct 2020
taking the boat from the main square in Orta San Giulio to San Giulio Island takes less then 5 minutes - the return trip is Euro 4.50. The boat runs every half hour or so. Once on the island, you 're in a peaceful and serene environment. The large monastery dominating the island is not publicly accessible, but the footpath around the island is picturesque - incidentally it is called 'la voie du silence' (trail of silence). Make sure to visit the Basicila di San Giulio, a 13th century church with many (restored) wall and ceiling frescoes...

Unforgettable place in Orta
Jun 2020
A sensational place that cannot be missed if you travel to the Orta lake. Easy access from Orta San Giulio, where from the lake front square (piazza Motta) there are boats tking tourists to the island every 15 minute for the cost of 4.5€ return ticket. The island is very small, there is a magnificent churchjust in fornt of the piers, and from there the main path starts. Very narrow streets, very silent, very ancient, the celebration of silence. Apparently there is a monastry in the island.
It's a unique place with little narrow alleys going straight down to the lake. sometimes people take the chance to swimm right from the end of these narrow streets as the water of the lake is very clean and transparent.
i left the island totally fascinated by the view of the surrounding villages on the lake coast, the green hills, the mountains at the back end of the panorama. Certainly a place to visit again.

Step way from the crowds
Sep 2019 • Couples
Escape the crowds in Orta by a 3 minute water shuttle (4.50 Euros) to the island and take the short stroll on the trail of silence and meditation.

The island features the Basilica di San Giulio. (13th century) on the island many, which has many frescoes.

According to tradition, it was the hundredth, and last, church founded by Julius of Novara and his brother Julian, both natives of Aegina in Greece, who dedicated their later years to the evangelization of the area around Lake Orta.

Legend has it that around year 390 the saint reached the island sailing on his cloak, and then freed it from dragons (symbols of paganism); after the defeat of the monsters he built a small church devoted to the Twelve Apostles.

Regardless of the veracity of the legend, it communicates the rapid and far flung spread of the Christian faith in only a relatively short time.

Worth a visit for the Basillica
Aug 2019
The boat ticket costs 4.50 euros return so if you are a family it might not be worth it unless you are particularly interested in churches. There is a wonderful basillica with amazing frescos and a fascinating 12th century pulpit. Otherwise, it is just a circular walk around the island on a narrow enclosed street. Some interesting features on a few buildings but not much else of interest. One souvenir shop, one restaurant which I don't recommend, but maybe it is OK out of tourist season. The town on Orto S Guilio has much more to see.

A must visit
Aug 2019 • Couples
In my opinion, the main reason to visit the lake Orta. Great frescoes in the Basilica di San Giulio. Amazing architecture, and views of the lake. Easy to get to from the Piazza Motta (Orta), local boats run every 15 minutes.

Nice, but short visit
Jul 2019 • Couples
Take the ‘public transportation boat’ (4,50 Euro forth and back from Orta San Giulio) and have a look in the church, walk around the Ilse. It’s certainly a must-do when you are at Lake Orta, but only will take 1 or 2 hours max, depending on whether you have some drinks over there, visit the shops etc. As said, a must-have-been-there place, but not spectacular.

A moment of heavenly peace...
Jun 2019 • Solo
To seize this moment of peace and silence, you will need to pick your time carefully and avoid a high density of tourists that could trouble your escape from time on the streets of the village. Try to find when the boats are not too busy, early in the morning, and when the light will enhance the character of the village. Take your time. This is a short walk in itself, but many buildings and meanders deserve a pause and some reflection. The signs posted will inspire you. This is the antithesis of a modern tourist tour. It will remain with you and in you much longer than the walk will take....

Not much to see but the church
Jun 2019 • Couples
It is a pleasent boatride, but not much to see or do on this tiny island. We walked the narrow street circulating it, we found one small restaurant (closed) and one souvenir shop. The church was pleasant, though. We did not stay long, and filed the visit under "been there, done that".
