The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

Old hospital now University

No charge. Free access to what is now university. Lots of information boards around in both Italian and English. Fascinating history - amazing to think it was founded almost 600 years ago.

The ancient hospital
Nov 2019
The enormous but magnificent structure was built in 1456 by a Tuscan architect: Antonio di Pietro Averulino, popularly knows as Il Filarete.
He also worked on the Sforzesco Castle and on the Cathedral.
He designed a large rectangular building in Renaissance style arranged around a series of inner courtyards.
The hospital moved to a new location, north of the city, in 1939 , the Ca’ Granda was renovated, after damaged of Second World War and now is the center of University Statale of Milan

Nice example of architecture of ancient Milan! Very close to the centre of Milan and you can go by walk. Just go to appreciate the architectural work of this ancient hospital milanese. Take snapshot of the wide internal court and breath the ancient times.
Include this place into your tour! Entrance is free as it is a University now.

Impressive

Once one of the oldest hospitals in Europe and now the University of Milan. It's an impressive old building that was heavily destroyed during the WWII, but has since then been fully restored to it's former glory. The piazza in front is bustling of people, mainly young students and there's some good cafées around. I'm not aware wheter there's any possibilities to visit the old premises, but you should walk through the main Barock gate of the university into the inner yard (Chiostro Maggiore). On the right hand side there's the Library of the Law Faculty. I was let into it to have a look. On the walls you can still see small rectangular holes that used to be where the hospita beds where and the patient's things could be kept in this hole-type-shelves. Also on the right hand side of the court yard, just passed the library, there's a pass through to another court yard where students seem to go for smoking, you'll find a glass cupola. Have a look through and you'll see remains of the hospital's old "fridge" (della Ghiacciaia).

Milan Italy - Ospedale Maggiore Ca' Granda Universita Statale
Feb 2017 • Solo
The university of Milan may not be on your places to travel but if you can fit it on your list of travels. You will not be disappointed both as an architectural building and as a landmark site it is considered one of the main attractions in Milan by the locals.

Wonderful time exploring the courtyards
Dec 2016 • Couples
The former Ospedale Maggiore, now the University of Milan, is comprised of multiple courtyards, surrounded by stately buildings. We enjoyed a stroll through beautiful and largely empty courtyards (students were on vacation).

My tour guide took me to this university. Over 60,000 students are enrolled here. It has nice building and history behind them. School was bombed during WWII and people rebuilt it.
