About
Locals and travelers flock to this quaint neighborhood for its inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and great drinks. The Navigli area is centered on the two remaining canals that once encircled Milan. During the day, you can stroll along the waterfront to spot beautiful street art and visit historic landmarks like Vicolo dei Lavandai. Grab a spot by the Darsena pond at sunset to people-watch and relax before heading to a cozy bistro for dinner. Complete your visit with some gelato and drinks at the local pubs for a night out. The traditional Fiera di Sinigaglia flea market takes place here once a week too. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience I Navigli
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Navigli
The Navigli is part of historic Milan. In the ancient days, the entire city was linked with canals, similar to Venice. Today, most of the canals are gone, but the Navigli remains a canal-based neighborhood. There are two major canals: Naviglio Pavese and Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande's bridges greet visitors at dusk with an amazing view. The Navigli district specializes in clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. Lifestyle reigns supreme here. You can start the walk from the Colonne di San Lorenzo, an antique colonnade in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. During the daytime, this place acts as a meeting point for artists and students reading books or chatting with friends; the nights turn it into a stepping-stone for club hoppers. Science lovers will also relish the opportunity to visit the Science and Technology National Museum Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing inventions of the Italian genius.

    Romantic and vibrant
I Navigli is the most romantic and vibrant district of Milan, in my opinion. As we stayed at a lovely apartment in Navigli, we had a lot of time to wander in the area and we really loved it. It is away from the main attractions of Milan but still within half an hour walk from the Duomo and the Castello Sforzesco. In Navigli you avoid the crowds from the main touristic spots but it gets full of people, both locals and tourists, in the evenings and late afternoons when it is time for an "aperitivo". The two remaining canals - Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese - that meet at the Darsena (Milan's ancient port area), are lined up on both banks with nice quaint restaurants, bars, art galleries and souvenir/art shops. There are also street vendors, selling various trinkets and keeping them directly on the ground. The canals area of I Navigli is the best place to spend your day at a leisurely pace.

    Great hangout ~
Took a tram to the canal in the evening and had a nice stroll down both streets. The atmosphere was definitely there with locals (mostly couples and friends) hanging out. Be sure not to miss some of these back-alleys where you can find hidden art galleries or gift stores. We got some local snacks and cocktails to try along the way. If there were more activity or performance along the canal, that would have been perfect!

    Quite Splendid
I spent 4 months working in Milano, and discovered the glorious Navigli. Cant beat it for Aperitivo. Every which way you turn, great deals for the cocktail hours with all you can eat of finger food.So atmospheric, bustling with life. The canal dates back 800 years but in 1482 Leonardo's first task when he arrived in Milano, was to improve the canal system linking as far as Lake Como. Now THATS history.

There are a few cafes, restaurants and bars by the water. It is an attractive place and there was even a chap in a gondola punting up and down the canal. Its not comparable to Venice mind!

Visited here last October in 2022. We had a brilliant time, weather was lovely, plenty of bars and restaurants to choose. Top tip…Get takeaway drinks and enjoy them on the canal !! Some bars do deals where they’re half the price so we had drinks which were €5 instead of €10.

I actually really liked this place. You have to walk down to get some quieter spots away from the loud party bars. We had the best drinks and food there. Take mosquito repellant as you will get bitten.
The only thing that ruins it is the constant peddlers who try to sell you something, the government should really put a stop to this as they are irritating.
Lots of nice restaurants but hunt around as there are many!

The name of the district is translated from Italian as "canals", as the appearance resembled Venice. The Grand Canal appeared first in 1178, and had a length of more than 50 kilometers. It was he who was used to deliver the snow-white marble from which the Duomo Cathedral in Milan was built.

Do not take the canal cruise. It is an utter waste of time and money. We felt ripped off. There is nothing to see apart from grotty buildings and graffiti. The boat goes up the canal for 20 minutes and turns around and comes back. The audio guide is via an internet link so if you haven’t taken your phone and earpieces you will be in complete silence.

Beautiful and bustling. So pretty and different from the center of Milan. We enjoyed eating canal-side but get there early if you want to partake in the aperitif. We had to wait about half an hour to get a table for five. Bring mosquito repellent!! We got chewed up!

Great for people watching. You can see a historical element with vibrant night life. We were two women and I felt safe too. No extremely loud music
