to travel ump lake maggiore in the sunshine and travel back from Switzerland by the beautiful scenic railway is a must. the ferry stops at most of the towns along the lake and it is easy to walk from the final destination to pick up the scenic railway and an easy change to the express an excellent day out. ps sit on the right when leaving the station to. get the. best views

This train portion of the self guided day trip is very enjoyable, originating in Stresa. The mountain train from Domodosolo to Lucorno - recommend you should be on left side of train up to Santa Maria Maggiorrie and on the right from there to Locarno Be prepared to be bored (no pun intended!) by tunnels and amazing bridges - dozens of them The complete train ride is about 3 hours, much more enjoyable if take break and get off at Santa Maria Maggiore for two hours. Explore this sleepy idyllic mountain village in the Alps. TIPS: - Be sure to check the weather, the trip is best enjoyed in the clearest skies possible. - The terminus at Locarno is not particularly interesting (although there is a tram up the mountain from downtown to Madonna del Sasso, a church erected in the very late 15th century). - The boat ride from Lucarno to Stresa is a unexciting 3 1/2 hours long, although there are many enjoyable vistas. Bring a book, your earphones, or deck of cards to pass the time.

Highly recommend taking the Lake Maggiore Express. The views on the way up to Lucarno, Switzerland are absolutely stunning. The return trip by train to Domodosolo is also something you have to see to believe. You will not be disappointed.

We did this trip on a Saturday from Stress taking the train to Domodessola first. We went on the 10.38 train from Stress and went around the Saturday wrist at Domodessola for an hour. The market there is vast and 1 hour does not do it justice. We then caught the 12.25 mountain train to Locarno. This train was full and does not have air conditioning so was just a little uncomfortable. We did not have the clearest of days but the views were just fantastic of the wooded mountains and the deep ravines. When catching the train stay on the platform at a point nearest the entrance as the train is only 2 coaches and it can be a bit of a scrum. We then had about 1.5 hours in Locarno a pleasant Swiss town with many nice shops and bars but all at Swiss prices. The trip was completed bay a 2.5 hour cruise back to Stress. The boat from Locarno leaves at 16.00 prompt and waits for no man. We booked the 2 day ticket which provided us with a rover ticket for the Sunday and used to to hop around the towns and islands nearest Stress. All in all a good two days on the boats and trains for €44 or €34 for just the single day on the trains and boat.

We were of the belief this was a ‘must do’ but it fell short. Perhaps we had been spoilt during our previous stay on Lake Como with the scenery! The trains from Stresa to Locarno did travel through tunnels and mountains but the scenery was 50% on the right during one stage & the remainder on the other. So despite panoramic windows you really couldn’t appreciate the view the entire way. Once in Locarno, it really is quite dull. Once we had walked around once that was it! We found a lovely restaurant with outside seating near the Lido on the lake. As it was a hot day, it was a lovely spot to sit with a glass of wine. The ferry back was lovely as we were able to sit outdoors being so warm. However, again it could have chugged along slightly quicker without missing anything. If you have other things you would rather see, do them rather than the Maggiore Express. It is all personal, however, we experienced far more stunning scenery in the weeks prior.
