Our visiting choir sang for a Mass in Chiesa di San Giorgio in May 2017. What wonderful acoustics! The inside features a beautiful triptych over the main altar, and a contemporary stained glass window of St George and the dragon at the back of the...More

With so many churches in Italy, it is important to categorize ones that are "must see", worth going out of your way for and those that give you a nice quiet pitstop to enjoy the silence and reflect on your journey, the town itself and...More

We attended Mass there on a feast day when a baby was bring baptised and got the full hour-and-a-half service, sermon, baptism. A good insight into Italian faith life. They have 12-page colour brochures in English pointing out some art from the 14th to 17th...More

It is like stepping back in time to the middle ages. San Giorgio is a quiet and cool respite from what passes as bustle on the square outside.

The main church in Varenna features art works from across the centuries, including a remarkable romantic portrait of St Therese of Lisieux, which looks almost as if done by Rennie Mackintosh or Klimt. The Romanesque structure is almost square, with nothing closed off to view,...More

I was invited on a walking tour from a couple of couples to see the Monastero garden. They wanted to stop in here. The stone is very different than central and southern churches.

My daughter chose this church to get married in. On the day it was just magical!!!! As it is quite a busy little square, the traffic stopped as the beautiful church bells started ringing at her arrival! Inside it was so lovely (not too big)...More

One of the most beautiful and quaint churches to stumble upon. We have visited Varenna many times before and always pop in here. Our two small children love churches and are always mesmerised each time they walk in here. We were lucky enough to stumble...More

Nice church and belltower, but don't go out of your way. A nice stop if you are in the square and good example of romanesque architecture.

Also, you could contact the church or Varenna and ask. There is a monastery down the street a short ways on the lake which would be a beautiful venue.
