I lived in Milan for a whole year before i discovered this gem! They have trains coming and going every half an hour from morning till 8pm i think. It takes like 45 mins to get to Bergamo from Milan. Amazing old town, mostly pedestrian, with many beautiful buildings, little stores and breathtaking views!

So easy to negotiate on foot (but ladies please bear in mind the cobbles when choosing your footwear!) and there are so many sights to see and great places to dine. It is well worth staying in the upper town so that you can fully absorb the atmosphere, and with hardly any traffic it is much quieter. The Duomo and... More

La Citta Alta is a place that you must visit since you are in Bergamo. There is transportation for your visit there. I personally felt a medieval atmosphere. Strongly reccomended a walk all around the region, a visit to the cathedral churches, a cup of coffee in a tranditional cafe and use of the funicular to be transfered to the... More

Very nice old town above the the new part of Bergamo up to which can be reached by a funicular which we strongly recommend. The old town is full of lovely little pubs, café and small restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the excellent Italian food. Here you can also fine souvenir shops with local with local handmade products.

A must see place - worth the walk to Citta Alta - the views are stunning - churches and narrow streets are a treat to walk in and around - trek higher to the very top where the castle ruins offer more stunning views - lots of lovely cafes or sit awhile and take it all in - cant wait... More

Such a charming old city. We had a walk all over the place, ups and downs. Beautiful historical city.

When travelling to Milan we landed in Bergamo airport and rented a car - which allowed us to see the old 'mountain' town of Bergamo - twice. We spent our first day here, and we just had to come back before we left again. It is such a lovely and original old Italian town. Narrow streets, high quality shops, great... More

This is such a beautiful and historic place to visit in Italy. Bergamo was not on my itinerary of places to see during my visit but a colleague recommended that I visit the old city, La Citta Alta. I'm happy I did. I loved the historic architecture and the beauty of the cathedral and museums. Just walking the cobblestoned streets... More

If you're coming to Bergamo, you MUST stay in the Alta Bergamo. Don't even think about the lower town if you want the charm of staying in an ancient town. Public transportation makes it so easy to get up there from the train station or (Milan-Bergamo) airport.

We got a Groupon deal for Milan's Christmas market which flew us to Bergamo airport. I was told by a friend we must visit Bergamo. To be honest, Milan was a bit underwhelming and we were keen to have a walk round in Bergamo. We managed to leave Milan early on the day of our departure and spend just under... More
