The signature place of a very friendly city
Jul 2019
While this piazza is probably the most spectacular place of the city indeed, especially due to the wonderful Venetian style city hall, I have to write more about the city as a whole and how welcoming and comfortable we found it.
If you are looking to take only one small bite of Italian sightseeing, if you are not prepared for (or are already sick of) the hassle and the tourist hordes of Venice or Rome, just come to Udine. While this city is a perfect sample of the Italian history and today's way of life -- you get to see the locals live their normal lives, taking their siesta in the piazzas --, it is not so badly infested with tourists and the tourism business as the bigger and more famous Italian cities. Highly recommended.

Udine’s ex-libris

It’s one of the city’s main attractions. Besides the impressive and majestic buildings around the square, the lion’s column stands out for its presence. Also, from the square one gets quite good perspectives from the cathedral’s dome and from the castle on the top of the hill. Enjoy!

Amazing square
Feb 2018 • Friends
The beautiful Piazza della Libertá, the oldest square of the city, and certainly the most impressive. At its center sit a column with the Lion of St Mar's symbol of Venice's rule over the city in the past, a renaissance fountain, the justice column, and two statues of Hercules and Cacus. At the southern end of the square is the Loggia del Lionello from the 15th century in Venetian Gothic style; it used to serve as the municipal building in the past and still serves that purpose today. On the opposite side stands the Loggia and Tempietto of San Giovanni dating to the 16th century with at its top the Clock tower, dating to the same period and very similar to the one in Venice's main square.

Beautiful, vibrant, great for people-watching
Jun 2018
At the heart of the city was the Piazza della Libertà, smaller than the plazas in Bologna or even Padova but bustling with community life. People who really live here were busily going about their work and their errands, stopping to chat with fellow residents. As I witnessed at 10:00 a.m., the two bronze Moors atop the town hall really did strike the bell, unlike their twins in Venice.
In 1350 the Loggia del Lionelo replaced the Common House (Casa Comune), which had become too small. The original loggia was replaced in 1441 with a design by Bartoleme delle Cisterne. Completed in 1456, it was destroyed by fire in 1876 but reconstructed by architect Andrea Scala working from the original plans. In the intervening centuries, it had become like the city’s porch, an open, well-proportioned structure with two rows of graceful arches supported by Corinthian columns on three sides and plenty of benches for sitting. The #1 city bus ran right past it.

Not to be Missed!

I came upon the loggia by chance at dusk and it was a magical experience with an acapella choir singing. The whole piazza area is like a film set - surreal.
