Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Its a steep climb up to the castle either using the steps or a cobbled road but once up there the views are very good.
The day I went was free admission - National Museums Day! - otherwise the admission price was quite reasonable. There is an archeological section and a section charting the unification of Italy on the ground floor, but up on the second floor is the art collection with pictures by Carpaccio, Tiepolo, etc. and a superb Caravaggio - well worth the climb up to the castle! On the top floor is a photography section, tracing the evolution of photography in Friuli - descriptions mostly in Italian. The views from the windows, however, are excellent andf some windows have indications as to what the buildings are you are looking at.

We didn't go inside but it was a lovely view from up on the hill and there's a great legend about a barbarian king who made the hill to overlook a battle.

Some meters higher than the town, with a nice view over the city. The mountains at the horizon were visible as well. Worth to go there. The castle itself is not very interesting from the outside, the little church with gothic frescos closed for renovation.

I enjoyed this mix of archeological museum / renaissance art / Italian history. Not all exhibits have explanations in English but most were still very well represented and accessible despite my basic Italian knowledge. The view from the castle is beautiful and worth a visit.

Worth to climb up to Udine castle at least for the nice view on the whole city. Inside there are various museums (we didn't visit them). On the hill, also S.Maria di Castello church, with its nice bell tower.

After a short walk from Piazza Libreta you can enjoy the best view on the city. The castle itself is like many other in Italy

We passed by the church of S Maria in Castello which was closed, and reached the top where the castle is located. Rather than an actual defensive structure, the castle is more like a renaissance palace and holds a few museums inside, which we unfortunately had no time to visit.

A hike up the hill on the edge of the historic center brought me to the Castle Museums. Crowning the castle was a weather vane of a golden angel. The field beside the castle afforded a view of the Alps, hazy in the distance.
The Museum of the Risorgimento, the 19th Century resurgence of Italian cultural and political identity, was well-done. Although the explanatory texts were only in Italian, it contained a lot of artifacts. I especially liked the propaganda posters and magazine covers from 1918.
Despite its somewhat misleading name, the Museo de Arte Antica housed a good display of art from the 13th through the 18th Centuries, with most of its emphasis on the latter three. There were plenty of saints and rosy-cheeked angels. The Hall of the Comune (the large meeting room) included a Tiepolo ceiling and some handsome frescoes.
Having accessed the castle by climbing up the steep hill from Maggio Park, I took the gentler colonnaded brick lane down to the Piazza della Libertà, where a school band was playing patriotic songs in the loggia. Udine was clearly more an authentic community than a tourist destination.

The whole castle complex is interesting but the view is even better. There are shops and place to eat up there as well. While steps are not a killer you can get a weekend shuttle bus.
