Needs Some Work
Dec 2019
This Baroque fountain, named for the four continents known when it went up (Europe, Asia, Africa, America), stands in front of city hall on Piazza Unita d'Italia. Created by architect Mazzoleni, the fountain was completed in 1754. When we went up to the rather unattractive work, there was no information plaque and it was impossible to determine the theme. All I could see was a pile of rocks with many statues. The water had been turned off, which also detracted from a positive impression.

Luckily, our next stop was at the nearby Tourist Information Center, where we received an audio tour guide. Back at the fountain, we found the guide to be most helpful. Four of the statues represent the continents and four symbolize major rivers (Nile, Ganges, La Plata, Danube). A winged female figure with arms outstretched on the top of the rocks symbolizes Trieste's hospitality. The whole scene depicts the city's prosperity in the mid-1700s.

I still found the fountain to be unappealing, disliking its execution and condition. Restoration work is needed for some of the statues and the rocks require a good cleaning.

Nice fountain
Jan 2020
I think it would make a great meeting point, because you can't really confuse it for any other statue. It says it to fountain, but no water on the day I visited. I'm sure there's a ton of history. A nice placard would help this fountain.

Nice little fountain..
Dec 2019
Due to the size of the square, one would expect a larger fountain.. It was not in the best state it could be..

In need of some restoration
Feb 2019
The fountain is interesting and tells the story of the known world at the time. Certainly some pejorative expression of caricatures; but also some damage that could do with restoration. As it’s in the centre of the Piazza Unita you can’t miss it!

Baroque fountain on the Piazza
May 2017 • Couples
The fountain of four continents is located on Piazza Unita d'Italia and stands in front of the grand building of the Comune di Trieste. At the time of our visit we had no understanding of this unusual and eclectic looking fountain, it was created in 1751-1754 and has elements to represent the four known continents, Europe, Asia, Africa and America. At the top of the fountain is a winged figurine with open arms to represent Trieste. Unfortunately there has been a lot of damage over the years and this shows.

Impressive looking fountain in the Piazza Unita d'Italia
Oct 2016 • Solo
This fountain is one of the main attractions of a visit to Trieste's main square, the Piazza Unita d'Italia. Some quite impressive workmanship has gone into its construction. These days it seems to serve as a meeting point for local people.

Gem on the Piazza Unita d'Italia
Sep 2016 • Couples
This fountain is from the middle of the 18. century before Australia was discovered. This is the reason why only four continents are there in the form statues.
