Beautiful old caffe and literary haunt. Unfortunately quite a ripoff. Normally I trust waiters recomendations for wine when there is no wine list. However, on this occasion we were surprised at the expensive outcome. The wine was good and the food just OK but for a place with paper place mats and those paperbag things containing cutlery and paper napkins the experience was very overpriced. It felt tired and unnecessarily snooty.

Were recommended this plase by the hotel. Fantastic interior and coffee-making machines! Absolutely worth a visit.

I did not know the history of this caffe when we found it. However, the ambience was noticeable.
The menu was modest, but we were satisfied with our selections. I had Mackerel and my husband had the crispy salad with beef. His steak was a perfectly prepared filet and the mackerel was lightly sautéed with vegetables. I have never eaten mackerel and was not sure I would like it, but now I am a fan.
Our waitress provided excellent service. She recommended a local wine, Refosco. We’ll be sampling more of it in the future.

Great peacefull feel with so much history you can hear the chats from a 100 years ago if you just listen profoundly. Books to read and buy, even great jazz concerts if you are lucky. very good service, so much drinks to choose and food is amazing as well. Hopefully they will preserve the place with its patina as it is. A must while in Trieste especially if you prefer a peaceful space.

This was my favorite cafe on my recent trip to Trieste. The place is very comfortable, with lots of locals playing checkers, engaging in conversation, reading or drinking coffee or a glass of wine. I found the staff to be quite friendly and fluent enough in English. Furthermore, it's great that it has a bookstore in it too, which helps you feel inspired for long conversations or reading cravings. On top of all of these, I had lunch there one day and I was extremely pleased. The service is very good, the food delicate and nicely presented, and quite affordable, in comparison to other prices in Trieste.

This is a place note to miss and I will return to it on my next trip to Trieste!

I read about this place a lot before the visit. I was a little worried that it would end up being one of those touristy places in Vienna or Venice, where the last trace of history in those historic cafes were trampled by the invading hordes of tourists. To my delight caffe San Marco is still an active coffee house serving the locals as well as visitors, where you see not only the handsomely dressed waitstaffs but also college students on laptops, couples sharing a dessert and two middle aged ladies resting after shopping. I wish they would continue forever.

Lovely atmosphere, reminiscent of a Viennese cafe, equally nice for a drink, staff friendly, lunch menu not wonderful for veggies but it a traditional cafe. A must, especially if your on the Joyce trail.
