Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We walked to Viale XX Settembre from the old city. The walk there was enjoyable and once we go to the tree lined street it was even more romantic. We felt safe. It was quiet when we were there (late afternoon) and there weren't alot of shops that drew our interest but definitely a place to have something "fast" to eat or to linger over a drink. We stopped at Cafe San Marco for a coffee and by the time we walked back down Viale XX Settembre many more people were coming out and alot of the tables were taken. One thing I would say is from the reviews I read on TripAdvisor I suggested to my husband that this may not be the nicest place to go. I was concerned for safety as some people used the term "seedy". We did not find this at all and if you just want to take a stroll and have a quick Bite or drink, this is indeed a place to go. We also thought it was far from the old city, but it was only a .7mile walk - which was very pleasant.

This shady Ramblas-like avenue (but much, much nicer) connects the center of town to the neighborhood of our hotel. It houses quite a few restaurants of various types, and, if the weather is good, you can eat between the trees.

Staying in the quarter Borgo Teresiano we regularly crossed the Via Carducci to go to the Caffè San Marco in the quarter Barriera Nuova (new barrier) further east. In this part of town, which was developed as of the 19th century, used to be located the custom's post on the old road to Vienna - thus the name.

It is not just the beautiful historic café San Marco, which can be visited here. Other sights are the Politeama Rossetti, the Synagogue, the Giardino Pubblico and the Viale XX Settembre, an attractive shopping street with trees and of which the western part, for about 600 meters, has been pedestrianised. It is one of the city's most popular places, be it for visitors or locals, to go for a stroll, to go shopping or just window shopping.

There is also the Cinema Ambasciatori in this street, in a striking Liberty style building with caryatids at the front. A good place to visit is also the rather new literaty café 'Lettera Viva'.

For many tourists the Viale XX Settembre in Trieste will not be the first street of that name they have been to in Italy. Very famous are the one's in Rome and Genova, but they can be encountered in many more towns. The name has been given in reference to the 20th September 1870, the date of the 'Capture of Rome', the final event in the 'Risorgimento', the Italian unification, when troops of the Italian King Vittorio Emmanuele II defeated a papal army, consisting of Swiss Guards and volunteers from many countries under command of a German general.

Heart of the city. There are a lot of restaurants around and we had lunch there. The only thing is that there are doves flying and walking around all the time and is a little disgusting.

Our apartment was above the Viale and every evening we would meet at 6 to have out aperitivo along with the students, young professionals and families of Trieste. Cool in every sense of the word!

Lively part of town that seems much more local and has more of a Slavic feel to it. Many shops and restaurants.

Couldn't believe how rundown poor Viale XX Settembre had become since I first saw it in 1974. All the charm and quirkiness has gone, shops are empty or stock dime-a-dozen goods. Very disappointing.

This is where the locals go to drink coffee and Aperol (separately), enjoy ice cream, eat Indian or Chinese food and generally hang out in the shade of tall buildings and trees. There are also some cool bars.

The restaurants and cafés in this area are much better value and less touristy.

If I was going back to Trieste I’d choose to stay somewhere near here.

I simply love walking trough this street. Fall and summer is my favourite time off year to visit it. In the morning perfect place to have coffee in the evening you can go out to one of many bar's located there. And you can find some nice shops there. But big trees making shade in summer time and changing colours in fall are the most beautiful thing there.

It was only by chance that we discovered Viale XX Settembre, a lively pedestrian street with loads of cafes, food outlets, bars and gelaterias to choose from. We were staying within walking distance and out looking for a pre-dinner drink near to the pizzeria we were heading to when we stumbled on the viale. In the middle of the street people were drinking/dining at the tables and chairs in front of cafes, but we were looking for something quieter and away from smokers and found a small friendly bar.
The Viale is paved and there are plenty of shady trees to block out the midday sun.
