Palace on Piazza Vittorio Veneto

One of the big palaces, which make Triest so beautiful. The museum itself is not so special, but the post office itself from the 19. century is great.

If you're going to the post office in any case, have a look in the postal museum on the ground floor, and see the uniforms, the military field post office, and the extraordinary machine for dis-infesting mail in times of epidemic.

The splendid nineteenth century post office up the stairs is worth seeing too. Magnificent post-offices seem to have been a feature of the Hapsburg empire, in which of course Trieste was a major hub. There's another one in Sarajevo.

(People interested in this museum may also be interested in the Bulgarian National Transport Museum at Ruse, a key Danube crossing point, which has a train with a postal workers' carriage equipped with pigeonholes to sort mail into, and a model of a postal paddle-boat. Also in Bohinjska Bistrika station, in the far west of Slovenia, which still uses an ancient Siemens signalling machine.)

I absolutely love mail and postal services, so it was a special treat when I saw that Trieste had this postal museum. It was slightly hard to find, but once I located it it was a fun stop.

The museum doesn't cater to people who don't speak Italian, and every display was in Italian. That being said, it was so unusual for a foreigner to visit the museum that the staff was super excited to see me. I only spoke a tiny bit of Italian and they didn't speak much English, but they gave me a personalized tour of the museum. There are postal artifacts dating back to World War I, old postal uniforms, and a few things to see. It's an old, small museum though.

Honestly, I wouldn't rate the museum itself that high; however, the staff were so incredibly nice, and you could sense they love what they do, and that level of excitement and service earned the museum a higher rating.
