About
The Miramare Castle and Park were commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg who decided — around 1855 — to build a residence worthy of his name and rank outside of Trieste, looking out to the sea and surrounded by a wide garden. The Park of Miramare, with a surface of 22 hectares, is the result of Maximilian’s long and demanding project on the rocky promontory of Grignano, which originally resembled a Karst area almost devoid of vegetation.

Free Admission to the Gardens and Park
We took a public bus from Trieste that took us by the waterfront and to the Park. The bus was extremely crowded but the locals were friendly and one gentleman even told us which stop is the shortest walk to the park. We went to the terminal stop of the bus for our return trip. The gardens are lovely and we spent a few hours there but chose to not go into the castle. There is a nice little cafe where you can have lunch and there are many benches for relaxing with ocean or garden views.

Historical castle and park on the seaside
The castle and the park surrounding it was beautiful. We travelled from the city center by bus 6. You can go until the final station (Grignano), the park entrace is very close to that. The park is full of interesting attractions and is very convenient in a hot, sunny day. The castle is also worth visiting, there were short, informative tables in every room.

A nice ‘do it yourself’ place to visit without a tour
I wrote an extensive review and it was lost so I’m not writing it again. Short story: beautiful gardens (free). Castle is lovely but pricy (13€ each). You can easily take the city bus from Trieste but the stairs from the road to castle are arduous so plan accordingly.

    Miramare Castle
We took this as an excursion from a cruise ship. The outside of the caste is beautiful, most of the rooms are furnished. There is an elevator inside if you have trouble with stairs. The fountain outside and the grounds are well maintained. The history of the castle was very interesting.

    Stunning! Worth a visit!!!
We had a fabulous time walking around the grounds and exploring the castle. It is very well maintained with amazing views. The rooms were very elegant and information in most rooms in Italian and English. The castle has a lot of history and was very affordable.

    Well worth the visit!
After years of driving past we decided to visit and now wish we'd visited years ago! The castle is steeped in the history of 19th century Trieste, the Hapsburg empire and its aristocracy. Stunning antiques, well thought our descriptions in each room if you don't opt for the audio version. And the park and gardens are magical with beautiful views over the Bay of Trieste.

Just go and visit, you won't be disappointed.
My husband and I went to Trieste for a couple of days and took a trip out to Miramare. It's really easy to get a bus from the centre of Trieste that goes directly to the castle so if you're without a car, fear not. FVG do an app that means you can get there without faffing about trying to find a place to buy a bus ticket. Anyway, the castle is beautiful. It's set in stunning grounds overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. To get to the castle you have to walk up the stairs from the marina (where the bus drops you off) and then take a stroll through the gardens. It's really picturesque. The entrance fee for the castle is inexpensive. It's well worth visiting because there are so many historical artefacts. Some beautiful renaissance paintings and lots of things to learn about. It takes a good couple of hours to walk round, if you take your time. My only criticisms is there aren't many places to sit, if you need to rest. It can get hot inside, as I don't think there is aircon. (I visited in summer before, it was stifling) Apart from those two things, I don't have any negative things to say. There's also a nice little cafe in the gardens. It can get quite busy so be prepared. Overall, a place definitely worth visiting at least once in your life.

Beautiful and interesting place. Terrible toilets.
Visited as part of a day trip from a cruise stop. Beautiful and interesting place. We had a guided tour and learnt so much. Amazing views. Well worth the visit. Dropped a star as ladies toilets were probably some of the worst I have ever visited. No seats, no toilet roll, trickle of water to wash hands, hand dryers not working, extremely smelly, not pleasant. Considering the number of visitors one would expect at least passable facilities. They need to be refurbished.

We were told the tramway was not operating but Trieste was impressive. Trieste differs from your typical Italian cities which I find chaotic most times. It has something to do with the Austrian-Hungarian influence. It is clean, tourist-friendly and orderly. Even the buses run on time!
We purchased a 3euro day ticket from one of the many multi-lingual ticket machines located close to bus stops. We rode a 25 minute bus ride to the Miramar Castle and spent several hours there enjoying the scenery and gardens.
Next we headed to Opicina by bus to catch some city views. Please advise bus driver to drop you off at the closest location. Landmark is the obelisk.
Next stop was the San Guisto Cathedral on the hill. Here we find Roman ruins and influence.
Trieste is close to Slovenia and a return visit is on the cards as we only had a day after getting off the cruise ship. Note Venice is 2 hours away from Trieste which serves as the cruise terminal.

The setting of the castle is very romantic – on top of the rock jutting out into the sea and visible from a distance. A true memorial to the tragic Prince and one-time Emperor.

Best to get there by the boat to appreciate the true beauty of the multi-dimensional structure.

Tickets, at €10, were quite reasonable and there was a steady trickle of visitors.

Décor was rather unusual to the normal European castles, with plenty of walnut panelling on walls and ceiling. We spent about an hour wandering the magnificent rooms.

There are extensive gardens at the back extending a long way up the hill. There is also a café at the end of the ornamental garden.

A really beautiful location set among beautiful gardens. The castle is perched on a rocky promontory above two little coves one of which one has a little harbour. The views are sublime and the setting in the gardens, which are meticulously maintained is amazing. The gardens themselves would be worth the trip but coupled with castle it really is world class. The castle itself has very interesting interiors some of which are fabulously over the top and so many have amazing views from their windows. The castle is surprisingly large and Contains a lot more then you would think. The entry fee is very reasonable but be aware there is no coffee shop in the house but there is a nice one in the formal gardens nearby. If you are getting there by bus from Trieste take the number 6 bus which leaves you at the little marina (which has a couple of restaurants) the back gate of the gardens. It’s a short walk into the gardens and from there to the castle itself. The bus journey is about 25 mins from the central station and costs around €3 return. I would also advise in high season that you prebook as this will get busy as a location.

Castle built for Maximilian on the cliffs and by the sea. Very ornate. Great views of the sea. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, one way path thru rooms and masks are required.

We travelled by train to Miramare and walked down through the beautiful peaceful park to the castle. The castle is well furnished and good explanations in English.
It is very interesting, the views from the castle are wonderful, you can see as far as Piran in Slovenia. The castle gardens are nice and well kept. We had drinks in the cafe but the staff there are rude. We walked down to the marina below the castle where there are two good restaurants, unfortunately they were just closing after lunch so we caught the bus back from the marina, a ticket back to Trieste cost 1.35 euro and can pay by card at the machine

This was part of a special trip for me as I retraced my father's postings during his WWII. At the time this historic castle was used as the headquarter building for the American troupes. They were welcome in the area as a guard against the Soviet Block. They were so well respected that the Italians have erected a monument to their service.

The castle is beautiful and the surroundings are stunning. It is free one Sunday a month to go into so I'd recommend going then if you can. The view from around the castle are great. This is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon

The castle itself is relatively small, the internal decorations are interesting though eclectic in style, and require some light understanding of its history (all clearly explained along the tour). The entry fee of € 12 seemed high for what is inside to see, compared with other museums and historical residences in Italy, also considering that part of the apartments upstairs were not accessible (not mentioned at the entrance). The park is big and pleasant, free to visit independently from the castle, impressive to consider that it is all man-made. There is a parking fee of € 2, and finding a spot can be a challenge during the summer, as people stop there to access the coast and go swimming. Overall, it was worthwhile visiting, and I wish we spent more time in the park.

The castle is beautifully situated over the sea. Its marble walls are impressive. Inside You can admire a lot of paintings and nicely decorated rooms. I especially liked the library with thousands of books and unforgettable view from the window. It literally brings you in another time. The garden is also lovely but it was already dark and we couldn’t enjoy it. The entrance fee is low 10€ per person. Don’t hesitate go and visit it.

Perched on a promontory that juts out into the sea, the castle looks wonderful as you walk up the drive! The admission price is quite reasonable and there is a very good guidebook in English availabe at the pay desk.
In the interior there was a lot of dark wood and heavy furniture presumably mirroring the mid 19th century style which I personally didn't much care for, however, it was all well kept and presented. The suite of rooms that you visit towards the end of the tour, decorated in the art deco style was quite a change! The views from the castle over the sea to Trieste and over the gardens are stunning.
The gardens are lovely and very well kept with pleasant walks giving new views of the castle and a nice little cafe - unfortunately, the people serving in the cafe are rather rude! The casteletto was closed and covered in scaffolding so presumably will be under restoration for the next few years!
