About

Just amazing

Just too amazing for words. History, a place of worship and an area of tranquility.
There is so much to see and to discover…

Marvelous place, (too) modestly presented
Oct 2021
Printed tourist guide hardly mentions the historical importance of this wonderful place - especialy in times when it was a seat of Patriarchate of Aquileia, and influenced not only the religious spheres, but many other aspects of lives of a considerable territory stretching as fas as Bregenz in Vorarlberg and including major parts of today's Slovenia, and Istria in Croatia. The guide however does a good job from the art-historical aspects, especially regarding the splendid mosaics.
Beside some mapping representation of the influential Patriarchate I missed also some basic explanation of the areas/houses or probably palaces where the "important people" of the Patriarchate lived/everyday life in times of the great fame, not just in times of the early christianity.
A great place to visit!

impressive

Really impressive church not in the normal way when you have to look up but in this case to look down at a large mosaiq. The work that must have gone into it leaves you in awe

BEAUTIFUL, IMPRESSIVE AQUILEIA, UNESCO SITE
Aug 2019
Not only is this church beautiful, the mosaics are gorgeous and the whole complex is worth visiting. There are other places to visit in this city connected to her history, interesting as well. For those who are specially sensitive, it is possible to feel the sacred atmosphere of this place, something which is correctly maintained and respected by asking to visitors to wear a proper attire. At night the church is very impressive. We were there with full moon, there was a concert in the church and that evening was magic. With these events, the mosaic floor is covered with carpets, to protect it from the steps.

WOW! Wonderful
Jul 2019
We knew nothing about this place and only stopped here because of the nearby campsite review.
What a place this is and what history!
Buy an all-inclusive ticket which gives you access to the basilica, tower and crypt.
The basilca is more of a monument than a working church as only the top end is used for services. The rest has an amazing mosaic, the largest I have ver seen, with elevated platforms to walk along and view it all. It is just superb.
There is also a sad WW1 graveyard behind the church with the most beautiful and poignant statue in it - very few people visited it when I was there but it was lovely.
This is a must-see place - why had we never heard of it before?

Fresh antiquity
Oct 2019
Mosaics as in no other place in the world. We are the lucky generation to admire them. Just few years they were on display in antiquity, before they were covered (and in this way protected). And I am afraid they will degrade soon because of all nefastous ambiental influences.

Buy all-inclusive ticket!

It is not just largest Paleo-Christian mosaic in the western world, but it is a place where one can easily emerse into early Christian society. I strongly advise to endulge yourself with all-inclusive tickets and take time to go under and above the basilica.

A marvel of Romanesque-Gothic style!
Jul 2019
We came here as second step of the tour we booked at the infopoint - I highly suggest everyone to go there to get the most out of their time in Aquileia! - and the visit was well worth the walk under the scorching sun (I would advice to go there earlier in the morning, not like us, close to midday in July..... :-0).

The basilica started in the 4th century and was finished more or less in the 15th century, so there is definitely a lot to discover!

The tour was really good in highlighting many of the salient aspects of this basilica. Sometimes they are literally under your feet (the ground mosaic) and, whilst appreciating them as such for the craftsmanship, the guide will tell you more about the commissioners and the reason for some of the decorations around the building.

Unmissable mosaics!

Wow! You HAVE to visit this place if you're in the area. Get an FVG card from an Info Point (then you get in for free) and an audio guide (from the same place, and free with the FVG card) and enjoy just how amazing the floor is in this place. Other excavations and the tranquil beauty of the grounds make this a must-see in this part of Friuli.

An ancient beauty
Jul 2019 • Family
This basilica is truely beautiful and along with it's bell tower is a great place to visit. We visited it with our children choire, I'm their pianist, and we had a great time. We have ancient tamples in Bulgaria also, but I see such well preserved roman mosaic floor for the first time. I'm grateful that we went there.
